The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, says Nigeria’s constitution allows Muslim women to wear hijab in line with the teachings of their faith.

He noted that all citizens are allowed to practise their religions as long as no harm or inconvenience is caused to other people.

He spoke at the National Mosque, Abuja, yesterday at a public lecture organised by the Coalition of Nigerian Muslim Women as part of activities marking this year’s World Hijab Day.

Adamu, represented by Hajiya Sidikat Shomope of the Social Mobilisation Department, Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), said it was unfortunate that the controversy over the wearing of hijab in the country had gone down to the school level and generated needless clashes.

There was violence on Thursday at the Baptist High School, Ijagbo in Oyun Local Government of Kwara State, leading to the killing of Habeeb Idris, a Muslim student of the school, when a rally by the Muslim students was reportedly disrupted by hoodlums and security agents.

The minister said: “The wearing of hijab by Muslim women is a Sunna as recommended in the Holy Qur’an (Q 33 V 59).”

According to him, there is a lot the country can gain by dialoguing on matters of religious differences rather than resort to violence.

“Our children will remain citizens of Nigeria irrespective of their faith. They will live and interact in the world outside school where no boundary exists between the religions.

“We should understand that the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria guarantees freedom of religion to all citizens. This, by implication, means that all citizens are allowed to practice their religions according to the teachings of their faith as long as no harm or inconvenience is caused to other people.”

He appealed to all traditional, religions and community leaders to use their offices to douse tension so that Nigerians could all live in peace, harmony and tolerance.

Adamu also called on parents and school teachers “to ensure that in both words and actions, they present the best model to our children to emulate.”

Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters, Aisha Duku; Hajiya Maryam Bukar Abba; Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Prof. Saadatu Hassan Liman; Prof. Rafatu Abdulhamid of the University of Abuja and the FOMWAN National Ameerah, Hajiya Rafat Sanni, asked hijab-wearing Muslim women to ensure that while the hijab covers their physical appearance, the essence on their lives and behaviours are also prioritised.

The wife of former Vice President Namadi Sambo, Hajiya Amina, said: “We are more determined to sensitize and promote this Islamic identity and culture without being intimidated.”

Director, Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), Prof. Ishaq Akintola, who spoke on ‘The Hijab as a Metaphor of Our National Aspiration’, noted that it is the responsibility of everyone, especially government at all levels, to ensure that the rights of all female Muslims are protected to adorn hijab in public.

I don't see why this is causing an issue
Allow the Muslim girl wear her head covering
Whether public or private school
If it's a Muslim or Christian school with rules on no hijab, then leave their school..simple
All states school must abide and leave unnecessary controversy alone

When we have people in governance repeatedly driving the country into the ground by all forms of sentiment, you'll not wonder why the country is still crawling in the midst of abundance.

Rights are not absolute... And this issue of religious dressing should be objectively addressed.

Imagine a lawyer who is a choir insisting on wearing chorister gown to a court on the ground of religion?

Every institution has it's laws, and when your belief negates the belief of others you leave them not try to follow the law selectively.

Is that why the Muslims have refused to send their wards to Quranic schools instead of forcing Hijab on missionary schools?

Muslim students who want to wear hijab should attend Muslim schools. Christian students who want to wear cassock or any religious garb should attend Christian/missionary schools. Public schools should be for everybody and the dressing should be secular.

There's nothing like Nigerian constitution. What we have is fulani constitution.

I can't understand why muslims would want to do things to Christians, that they would clearly not allow, if the reverse were the case.

Muslim students should restrict themselves to Islamic schools and leave missionary schools alone if they can't abide by their rules. But expecting that Adamumu or any of his kinsmen to be reasonable is like expecting a pig to bathe itself every morning.

Let them wear their hijab in their Islamic and Arabic schools. They should not wear hijab to Christian schools! It's that simple. If you cannot comply with the rules, then you leave! Useless hypocritical people

This, by implication, means that all citizens are allowed to practice their religions according to the teachings of their faith as long as no harm or inconvenience is caused to other people.”

I was hoping to see the part of Nigerian constitution that stated it categorically but was disappointed to see the above statement which we all are aware of.

But the question is, does the above constitutional freedom apply to Muslims only or all Nigerians ?

If it's for all Nigerians, then others can as well wear their religious attires/regalia to their various schools. Abi are we not all Nigerians?

I'm always surprised at how these people always think that this section of constitutional freedom belongs to Muslims only. undecided

If Muslims cannot obey a simple school uniformity rule, then let's cancel school uniform and allow people to wear whatever they seem good to schools, after all, what's good for Peter is also okay for Paul.

Objectively, I think the Islamic laws about women should be effected in Nigeria..

The moral decadence these days is something else..

It is almost impossible to go on Instagram for minutes without seeing things that would corrupt your decent mindset ..

It is hard not to agree that the Whites have risen above us in many areas(economy, security, education, welfare, etc), the only thing we have over them is our culture...

I don’t care about hijab and whoever is wearing it. As long as u don’t impose it on anyone then let whoever chooses to wear it go ahead.
As long as native people can wear their juju clothes go to offices and enter public transportation, just like those church people. Then we see no reason to disturb hijab wearers.

THROUGH ENVY THEY LIKE TO DESTROY GOOD THING , BUT TO SAY THE TRUTH , IS THERE ANY GOOD THING THAT MUSLIM/ISLAM HAS BROUGHT TO THIS WORLD.?

Freedom of religion that is in constitution didn't tell anyone that pupil should disobey rules of the school they attend.
Schools have dress code and they know before they seek admission into these schools.

But are Muslim just waking up.?
Missionary came and built schools, Muslim don't want to go before, but at the end they saw its good, and most of them are educated by missionaries, but now they want to destroy the legacy of the missionaries.
Muslim has schools too, but their schools are in sorry state, and they envy Christian own.

Very soon, they will enter our military, saying women in military can wear hijab.
Hijab is just for identity, yet they are so promiscuous. Can they deceive God?
Hijab is even before Islam, and prophet Mohammed didn't force it on anyone.
But at the end, they will say Islam is the religion of peace, but are they for peace? Reality tells

I strongly believe nobody is against an average Muslim lady wearing hijab at federal government owned schools or Muslim owned schools, the bone of contention have always being Muslim students insisting they will be wearing hijab in christian missionary schools, which they know have principles and guideline which every student of that school must abide by,which wearing hijab is against the rules of the school.
It's a Christian school, and you must respect the ethic and dress code governing the school.

I really have no issue with my fellow colleagues wearing hijab at school... I believe its their religion and it's identity.

But my problem is with students wearing Niqab and Burka. How can that be allowed. To me it posses a great security and identity threat.
