Olaf Scholz, the German chancellor, has pulled the plug on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline in response to Russia’s decision to recognise the independence of separatist-controlled territory in eastern Ukraine.

“The situation today is fundamentally different,” he said. “And that’s why we must re-evaluate this situation, in view of the latest developments. By the way, that includes Nord Stream 2.”

Scholz said he had asked the German economy ministry to withdraw its report on the country’s security of supply that it had submitted to the Bundesnetzagentur, the Federal Network Agency, the German energy regulator.

“That sounds technical, but it’s the necessary administrative step to ensure that the pipeline is not certified,” he said. “Without this certification, the pipeline cannot go into operation.”

What is Nord Stream 2 ?

As Western powers attempt to avert a Russian invasion of Ukraine, Nord Stream 2, a long-touted energy infrastructure project that has already driven a wedge between Germany and the United States, could become a key bargaining chip.

The $11bn gas pipeline across the Baltic Sea, owned by Russia’s state-backed energy giant Gazprom, runs from western Siberia to Germany, doubling the capacity of the already-in-use Nord Stream 1 pipeline.

While Germany has maintained it is solely a commercial project, Nord Stream 2 also has geostrategic consequences, bypassing Ukraine and potentially depriving it of the approximately $2bn in transit fees Russia currently pays to send gas through its territory.

The pipeline could heat 26 million German homes at an affordable price and construction was completed in September.

However, German regulators have yet to issue the final legal permission Gazprom needs to begin operations.

The US has viewed the pipeline as a geopolitical tool for Russia to undermine energy and national security, increasing Moscow’s leverage over Europe, where gas prices have been soaring.

This is particularly important now when Europe sees a decline in domestic gas production and an increasing demand for imported gas.

Putin’s oligarchs have been bleeding the country for investment through capital flight. Wealthy Russians consider the country a very bad place for investment. At least 1 trillion USD of their national wealth is stashed abroad. Probably, as much has been spent during Putin’s rule on private consumption in other countries.
This leads to deterioration of infrastructure and de-industrialization. Russian economy is falling back into the pre-Soviet model where it relied on export of raw materials and products of extraction, and military production. Even in the military sector, more and more of Russia-produced weapon consists of imported components...
Also it's so dependant on energy exports, and prices are low. The other major export products - arms and weapons sales - are up a bit, but this applies to their competitors as well. Economic sanctions imposed by many countries following the Crimean annexation are taking a toll. Businesses prefer to invest in more stable environments with much lower risk factors. And doing business with Russia at the risk of losing business with the US is viewed as a no-brainer by many countries..
With this new sanction I intend to see how far Russia can go in the game..

Some Nairalanders think Russia is supreme and can do whatever they want to. E go shock them when the Russian economy starts collapsing.

Others say that China will support Russia -

The Chinese and USA economy are interlinked. China will stay on the sidelines, in a neutral position.

It was about to go live. Russia was hoping to earn trilllions of revenue from this project. Now they will earn ZERO.

The worse situation is this, Germany & Europe will now turn to other sources of gas and now that we are heading into spring, they will ensure they get sufficient gas resources before the next winter. Yes the cost will be high, but eventually cheaper gas will be obtained by building new infrastructure and forming new trade agreements.

Russia is shooting itself in the foot.

Good. I have a few but too political. I love non-fiction action by those outside politics. I saw a documentary Bots on Aljazeera too and it fits my spec. There is no country without corruption but in my opinion after reading those books, Russia's account is very troubling

But Russia abandoned their own side of the agreement when they annexed Crimea in 2014.
Russia also abandoned the Minsk agreement and another agreement that I cannot remember now if Russia has not kept to its side of the agreement even after Ukraine gave it its nuclear arsenal why then should NATO?
Don't you realise that it is because of this bully tactics and annexation of crimea in 2014 that is making Ukraine seek for protection by wanting to join NATO since Russia is refusing to keep to their own side of the agreement?

I saw a map showing NATO placement in the region, if NATO takes Ukraine Russia is in soup

My own taking is this. The highest that USA and its so called Allie can do to Russia is to stop treading with her. And that's all... Russia will turn to Asia, South America and Africa. With a promise of protection from America and her allies. Russian ships Will be sailing without any blinking. Her assets in other countries will be Safe. Russia is not like Iran that USA and UK Will hijack her ships..try that with Russia and see all USA and UK ships in the bottom of the seas.
I see EU suffering more..and if Ukrainian government get the go ahead from their master to join NATO or attacks Russia peace keeping force in donbas. They will see the meaning of Russia in full.
