These things are relative. What or who determines who is doing well and who isn't? The person you feel has arrived and probably wish you were like , probably doesnt feel the same way and feels he can do better. Should he refuse to aspire because there are people he is "better than" ?

quite a strong argument you have here.

But why will a man take that kind of decision without at least communicating with the family from time to time or better return home when you discovered things are not moving as expected. This is one of the reasons I salute women a lot. We men will put them in tight corner n equally disappear living them with a huge responsibility to take care of the children. Father can abandon his children when he encountered challenges but a mother will stick to them even in the face of challenges. Go bless our mothers.
