FACT CHECK: Have Nigerians Seen Only One Fuel Scarcity Under Buhari as Femi Adeshina Claimed?

Femi Adeshina, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, said Nigeria has only seen one major fuel scarcity since the start of the Muhammadu Buhari administration.

He said this on Tuesday during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, adding that the Buhari-led administration brought normalcy to petroleum supply for years.

CLAIM: Nigeria has only seen one major fuel scarcity since the start of the Buhari government.

“Each time this issue of fuel scarcity comes up, there is also a word that comes to my mind. That word is called ‘SNAFU’, and it’s an acronym for Situation Normal All Filed Ups,” Adeshina said.

“What happened is a SNAFU in the petrol supply chain in the country. In the life of this administration, which will be seven years in May, it is only one major fuel scarcity we have had.”

VERIFICATION: The BBC reported in November 2015 that a “severe fuel shortage” hit Nigeria, with long queues of angry motorists waiting for hours outside petrol stations in major cities to fill up.

BBC described it at the time as the biggest fuel shortage in Nigeria since Buhari took office. This was because the fuel crisis halted economic activities in major cities like Lagos to some extent.

In April 2016, Nigerian on Twitter used hashtags #EndFuelCrisisNow, #NoFuel, and #NoLight to voice their frustrations over a fuel crisis that had lasted over seven days.
The Vanguard reported in May 2016 that the April fuel scarcity had resurfaced.

In December 2017, there was a nationwide fuel crisis around the Christmas festive period. The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) claimed marketers hoarded the product.

Premium times Reports indicate that the severity of the fuel crisis made people sleep in fuel stations. At the same time, transportation fares doubled. The crisis led to a surge of black markets and unequal fuel prices in the southwest.

When citizens raised the alarm over an impending scarcity in 2021, the NNPC said it would not happen. But in February 2022, fuel scarcity started disrupting the daily lives of Nigerians again.

CONCLUSION: Nigeria has seen more than one major fuel scarcity since the start of the Buhari government.

VERDICT: The claim that Nigeria has only witnessed one major fuel crisis under the Buhari administration is false.

They're thinking we don't keep record or as they're forgetful, others are just like them.

When you have chief lia-r in government, the consequences is always these types of claims.

I don't even know why the people interviewing him didn't draw his attention to the lies.

The Buhari government have lied to the extent that, even when they could be saying the truth, the people just can't trade their faith in believing them.

Even if Lai Mohammed tell you good morning around 6am... check time to confirm.

Despite the fact that the Buhari government has proven time after time to be one of the worst in African history, one cannot ignore the verifiable fact that fuel scarcity has almost become a thing of the past for some time now. On this issue the dullard from Sudan seems to have done a little better.

Off the top of my head

1.2015/16

2.2016/17

3. The current one.

So, that's three. No scarcity from 2017 to 2021

Still, it isn't a good record, it's still lipstick on a pig.

BBC agrees with me.

The only way to stop scarcity is to remove fuel subsidy. Scarcity would end completely

The good thing is fuel scarcity crises is not frequent like we had under PDP. And also it doesn't last long like we witnessed under PDP.

That's because Buhari cut a loophole that allowed subsidy money to be wasted...by making NNPC the overall importer of fuel...or at least in overall charge.

Still, it was not a solution to the real reason why we had scarcity.

Lots of Kudos to Buhari government.

I'm not eager to give him kudos.

The honest truth is that if he had removed subsides on petrol completely, the problem would have been solved a long time ago, and we would have had an extra, at least an extra 6-8 trillion naira in money for budgetary spending between 2015-date.

Instead, we have a subsidy monster that needs lots of money and is not satisfied. Last year, we spent 2 trillion naira on subsidy, one trillion more than the previous year, and this year, we are set to spend 3 trillion naira more on subsidies..and the amount may grow before the year runs out due to rising oil prices.

The thing is, at the end of the day, the only way to end scarcity is by removing price controls on petrol, and ending subsidy payments so that the petroleum sector would be incentivized to build refineries at home.Meaning we won't be importing fuel again...and running the risk of importing substandard fuel

Also, profits made would be enough to build and maintain, and upgrade refinereies at home of a better standard than the substandard ones where we refine fuel in Europe....fuel so dirty that it is among the worst in the world.

Niger Republic, our northern neighbor, has had no subsidy for ages. Fuel sells for N350 per liter. They make a profit, and can export fuel to 3 countries from their single refinery.
