You've not been following the news, haven't you? You really think the Russians have not been planning for this conflict ever since the 2014 conflict. As it stands today, Putin made the necessary arrangements to insulate the Russian economy to a certain degree. As an alternative to the much talked SWIFT system, the Russians built the SFPS system and equally rely heavily on crypto currencies. Even the Chinese have built their own CIPS system. Even the so-called sanctions raised so far targets just few people and relatively unknown banks. Sure the Ruble dropped to new lows, but the Russians will weather the storm.

Please note that this conflict is bound to affect western Europe even more. Russia controls 40% of the gas the gas western European homes and industries recieved, and there's no one to fill that gap in the short term as Nord Stream has been kept on hold indefinitely. That means Europe will buy gas at a way higher gas compared to cheap Russian gas, else they will freeze. Oh....and gas prices are presently quite high right now in western Europe. Russia now stands to gain a lot from the high oil and gas prices.

Russia na the largest country in the world na; twice the size of America; 19 times bigger than Nigeria; and occupying about 11% of the Earth's landmass. Not really. The sanctions will eventually bite and affect the Russian people.

And yes Ukraine has been used as a bait to provoke Russia into an unfavorable situation. The Nordstream 2 pipeline was a threat to the US and NATO unity, and had to be stopped one way or the other. Germany already suspended the certification of the pipeline and the US and NATO now have the opportunity to kill it permanently because of this crisis. NATO needs a boogeyman to remain relevant in Europe and Putin fits the bill.

Putin may have made a huge mistake on this one.
