Look at it this way. For example the LGBT community is persecuted in Nigeria. I believe it is moral for them to have equal rights in this country but my belief isn't enough to change anything. Why? Because I, and the people who think like me don't have the numbers orthe power to effect that change. Until a critical mass of people support them, nothing will happen.

If China takes Taiwan, we're pretty much screwed. China would corner the semiconductor market, making them the manufacturers of most of our electronics. With the growing prevalence and reliance on smart devices, IoT, and cloud services, digital security would be a nightmare. Even moreso than now.

For that reason, I don't believe America will let Taiwan fall. Strategically speaking, they can afford to lose Ukraine but not Taiwan.

No offence but this is very one-track thinking. I'm not talking about blowing up all your opponents and my example never insinuated anything like that. Power and might may come in the form physical strength, military, intelligence, money, social dexterity, beauty, etc. However it still holds true that at the root of most of this lies the implicit threat of violence.

I agree that Trump is a stronger presence than Biden, mostly due to his bombastic personality. Most countries think twice before messing with him and it's no coincidence that Russia took break on their invasion of Ukraine while he was in office.

However, Trump is no longer in office and Putin knows he's dealing with an establishment guy. Establishment guys are more professional and 'presidential' but that makes them predictable. Russia knows what to expect from America now.

Now let's look at the hand Biden is working with. The American population is shell-shocked from all the pointless wars of the past, China is salivating at the chance to take Taiwan once America is weakened or distracted, the EU has grown fat and useless among others. Not to mention, American media and academia have been deeply influenced by the unholy combination of corpo and foreign commie money, leaving the people fractured, unpatriotic, fat, and angry at each other. Hell, the military seems to be more focused on diversity and inclusion—which isn't a bad thing in itself but becomes a problem when it's done at the expense of strength.

I think he's right to sit this one out for now.

Maybe having a mad man in power who could escalate any situation into nuclear war is the "deterrent" they believe that Putin would fear, while Biden is predictable like most US Presidents who would step back from the brink of a nuclear crisis with Russia. Trump that cancelled planned visit to Denmark because he made an offer to buy Greenland on Twitter and Denmark premiere laughed it off jokingly.

Putin's move to act now is based on Ukraine parliament voting to seek NATO membership in 2020. While Zendi points out it's an existential threat, is Russia sponsoring and organising a seperatist war in Eastern Ukraine since 2014 not an existential threat to Ukraine which prompted it to vote to seek NATO membership?

I believe nuclear powers should be allowed to breathe. International bodies should step in and seek a referendum in the Donbas and Donetsk regions and NATO should take Ukraine membership off the table. The world can't go to war over Western Ukraines wishes like in those days where they start World war over Poland and Czechoslovakia. Western Ukraine should be advised to let the Eastern part go if they vote for independence, but be bribed with open access to EU markets. Money solves all problems.

As for Taiwan, it belongs to China. The Chinese ruling party ran there taking China's federal reserve with them during Chairman Mao's revolution and declared an independent state. The West can bully and provoke but what's just is just, and eventually Taiwan must return to China. USA won't like it's ruling class running to Alaska with it's Federal Reserve and declaring a new country. China will not risk taking Taiwan now when it's growth is based on open trade though. That will be cutting your nose to spite your face. China will take Taiwan with no shots fired, when it holds enough economic leverage on enough countries in the world that they agree and recognise Chinese Taipei as a region of China. Of course, with the threat of a strong military acting as insurance.

Students of history will know that European countries have been holding conferences to delineate and merge their lands from Berlin conference to earlier conferences, whether it's splitting Prussia into parts that fell into Germany, Poland, Latvia and Lithuania, delineating Austria-Hungary, splitting Poland-Luthuania, or to the splitting of the Balkans in the 1990s or Montenegro and Kosovo in the 2000s, Europeans have been open to discussing borders. They should allow frank discussion with China and Taiwan in the same spirit, and also allow Africa to discuss its borders. Russia was always a winner in these historic discussions but lost it all at the break up of the Soviet Union. What Putin is doing is just trying to recover small grounds.
