How long ago was this? When did they start classifying themselves as Igbo?
1700 or 1800 not sure

But explorers wrote that they speak the Igbo language and identified themselves as Igbo

Did they start calling themselves Igbo during this time or is this simply when the name was recorded by Europeans?

Also can you link any sources of explorers stating they encountered people who called themselves Igbo?

Igbo was found in world map of 18th century.
In 17th century Igbo was identified as Ebo a tribe under the Benin kingdom in the world.

Had they been calling themselves that prior to the 17th century or is that just when it was first recorded?

Hello I'm arguing with someone and I need to know who came up with the name "Igbo"? How did it come to be and how old is it?
As far as the 1600s you can read journals from European that visited the Nigerian coast where they talked about Igbos ( who they referred to as 'Hackbous') as a race of people that lived just above the coastal region and supplied almost all the goods in the coastal delta. The Igbos were known for their fine manufactured goods and large trading canoes. The first picture is a drawing of some Igbo swords taken by European travellers in the 1600s.

In the early 1700s onwards, European travellers also noted Igbos a group called I' gboes or Egboes, as they were called in modern day Northern Nigeria. They were primarily well-known in the North for luxurious, perforated clothing similar to the second picture below.

It was when more interactions with actual Igbos were made that Europeans were introduced to the much softer 'Igbo'.

Igbo was first known under Benin kingdom please you people should stop lying no one mentioned Igbo in 16th century European never visit Igbo until 18th century. Benin was the place they visited in that region and no body meet igbo in the north at that time.

But in 17th century Igbo was first mentioned by olaudah equiano he was a slave that was bought in Ebo/Igbo. Olaudah equiano narrated that he was bought as a slave in Igbo tribe, a tribe under the Benin kingdom and control.

European maps of 17th century also supported the claim naming a little region Ebo with big Benin name Above it.

Read this book: The Life of Olaudah Equiano Writing by Olaudah in 17th century.
