This thread will be of help to you if you are a freelancer or service provider doing business world over and need a good option for receiving payment for your work and services.

Why this thread?

A lot of people have been coming to my dm with a lot of questions about wise, others asking here on how to go about one issue or the other with their account, so I opened this thread to share my 3years+ experience with wise, and help where I can.

A little about me...

I started freelancing on freelancer.com as an article writer under the tutelage of Ladywriter here on NL in 2014 (thanks to Seun for this platform, and Ladywriter for that thread)... I have always been a graphic designer but knowing where to sell your skills matters a lot. I left freelancer same year, and have been on Fiverr as a level 2 seller and graphic designer to date, and it has been amazing.

I understand what freelancing is, and how important it is to get paid with less hassles and to get good value for your money, hence this thread.

Why Wise.com

Wise.com was formerly transferwise.com until sometime last year. Transferwise had a vision of helping people send money across international borders effortlessly, and with ease. For some time now, they have been doing a great job and evolving, hence the decisions to change their name to transcend transfers. Now you can have real bank accounts in your name in over 50 countries and do business with just anyone anywhere independently. You will receive it in your wise account and exchange it with any reputable exchanger ( Welcome baby grin)

Wise claims to be 3x cheaper than Paypal, and also 8x cheaper than many international transfers. From my experience, this is very true.

Understand the scope

As a freelancer, I have always withdrawn my earnings via PayPal and Payoneer on Fiverr with the help of exchangers, but have also needed a way of working directly with clients and getting paid without depending on these platforms...

I started using wise to receive funds directly with some clients in 2018 directly into my bank account of course with them converting it at a very low bank rate then. The Nigerian Government banned all forms of foreign remittance through processors like transferwise, but somehow that became even better for freelancers.

Wise doesn't just help you get paid but have taken transfer a notch higher. Through wise, you can have a traditional ACH bank account in several countries, and have people send you money even without having a wise app. They can also send you money from their balance with just your email address from their balance and you get it in seconds.

Account activation

I may not share everything at once, but all you need to get started. You will need to create your wise account, verify your email and verify your Identity also. With this you can basically receive payments from people's balance with your email, but somewhat limited.

To have those bank details, you will need another level of verification and this is where a lot of people have issues... You need to fund your account with a certain amount - $25 or so, alongside your identity verification to be able to have proper bank details. Personally this wasn't an issue for me cos i already had payoneer debit card to fund my account and get it activated...

A lot of people have tried their Nigerian bank account, even dollar bank account and it was declined. Truth is that anything coming from Nigeria is not allowed on wise. Even Dollar Africard is not allowed, cos it is issued by a Nigerian Bank... Others still don't know you can receive small funds directly into your account and use it to verify your account - Good news! it works and i have been helping people do this for some time now...

Now you can receive small payment with your email address to verify your wise account alongside with identity verification. Wise may ask for additional information if you want to get some type of account details, eg EURO account details...

I will talk about how to navigate through wise, and which account type you should create - business or personal, later in the thread, and how to avoid issues with wise (Yes they can have issues cos they are regulated). There are things they don't like and they can up and close your account any day... yes they can, and you don't want to have such an experience...

I will also do a comparison between Payoneer, PayPal, and wise and their strengths and weaknesses so you choose which works best for you.

Note to Scammers

This is not another means of collecting money from your "Maga". If you are a scammer or into shady business, wise doesn't like you, and personally, I don't like you too. As we learn more about how to make life easier for legitimate people who work hard with their skills and services to earn money, don't try to use this as a means of stealing people's money, and further spoil the platform or limit the chances of real Naija hard workers... Personally, I have my standards and terms before I exchange or receive funds for anyone... Scammers stay off!

PS - I am always, always buying wise funds from legitimate sources at a very, very sweet rate, with quick payment. I made it so because I am not just an exchanger, but an active freelancer also, so I know what it means to get good value for your money...

If you have any questions or issues you are having at the moment, ask here and also share your experience here, i will try to answer as much as I can... If you must come to my dm, come with wise funds as cola grin. Contact me through my signature

Those whose account has been verified through what I shared can also testify on the thread... if you have exchanged your wise funds with me, or I have helped you withdraw, you are the real MVP, so pls say hi...

Yes it is. You don't need a vpn. The only issue is before you get a Payoneer debit card, you must receive $2000 and above from freelance sites or other marketplaces...

This is a great post. Now, I want to ask if it is possible to send USD from Transferwise to Payoneer using Payoneer's USA bank account?
Re: What You Need To Know About Wise.com (formally Transferwise) And Its Advantages. by megamindmaster(m): 8:58am On Feb 05, 2022
I have not tried this before, so you can go ahead and try. One thing you must know is that the default account that payoneer gives you has limits and may not receive just any funds.

Wise bank accounts are more accepted and viable to use, so sending from Wise to payoneer may be declined. All the same give it a shot and share your experience

Make a design of your National ID card, print it out on a plastic card and use it for your online account verification and transactions. For full details, visit http://naijaprops.com.ng/2022/02/14/make-your-national-id-card-design-and-print-it-on-plastic/

*UPDATE! *UPDATE!! *UPDATE!!!

A lot of wise account blocking has been going on lately and a few of the people who verified their account with my help were affected. Wise like any other e-money company is heavily regulated and of course, has strong terms of service and user agreement, which they update from time to time.

I also noticed the reluctance from genuine folks to use wise because of the increasing banning lately, but it is not mysterious. Here are a few things I found out from my research, experience, and even discussion with their rep via Twitter...

1. Take some time to build tractions on your new account. I help and advise people to create wise accounts, but be careful not to run off immediately and start doing huge funds with it... Someone I helped get verified go his account got it banned under a couple of weeks because of this - just around 5k dollars from different sources... build traction. Sometimes allow it to lie fallow for a while before doing the next transaction... receive some smaller denominations and be consistent, but wise with it... the older your account gets, the stronger it becomes, so it is not how fast, but has well you use your account.

2. Wise kinda prefers wise to wise transfers from balance, and don't look into them as much as they do to international cross border transfer. I know that is why they exist in the first place, but they investigate it. If you will receive funds from someone in USD or GBP or EURO, specify what it is for, eg payment for website development, marketing, graphics, etc... services you offer

3. If you a receiving a payment from someone and you see the payment is on hold for some checks and asked to give it some time... do not do another transaction, I repeat, do not do another transaction with a pending payment... better still cancel that payment and give it some time before trying again.

4. You can receive funds from your Payoneer account and even your PayPal account to your wise account. I do this all the time but make sure it is always your name, like your account, and the name you have on your wise account. if it is different, and you do this over time, you are calling their attention to investigate and ban your account, and guess what? they will not tell you why... and oh, before I forget, don't try sending money from wise to Payoneer, or PayPal, YOU WILL GET YOUR ACCOUNT BANNED! because it is against their TOS (for reasons best known to them)

5. Be careful with crypto transactions or mentioning them in any transaction description. they are not particularly against crypto, but staying away from always mentioning it will do you good.

6. Wise, like every other e-money company, is not a bank, and storing your money on this platform is not advisable. You are even more at risk with a UK company like wise because there are EU laws that prohibit keeping money on these platforms for a while.

7. Even though wise says they have no limit, your account is not all-powerful. People with 100s of thousands of dollars in their account have been banned before, even though they get their money after some time, you don't want to go through that stress... so like I said, build traction.

In summary, this is not to scare anyone from using wise. I recommend wise any day any time, but you will have to learn them to avoid triggers and pitfalls. If you have used PayPal for business before, you know this is the smaller of two evils grin

I attached a screenshot of my conversation/response from their rep through their Twitter handle (they actually answer faster there) and also a screenshot of my wise account transactions from yesterday to show you I do transactions in thousands of USD every day without issues...

questions are welcomed

you don't like using money to activate an account? that sounds like going to a bank to open an account and they tell you how much to "deposit" to get the account operational and you say you don't like it... lol!

it is a two-step process. both deposit and ID submission goes together, so you don't do one and leave the other, just like in real life...

as for your advert on my thread... wei don sir! undecided

If you read carefully you may have noticed where I mentioned that anything originating from Nigeria is not accepted on wise. It has to be offshore.

You can try flutterwave batar card though that is a long route, but any card issued by a Nigerian bank will not work on wise

Hey bro! Just wondering if the ban has been lifted? My company made a payment to me using Wise. I don't have a wise account, so just gave out my UBA Domicillary account details and I got my payment.

How do you withdraw your money from Wise as a Nigerian living in Nigeria?
What are the options to get money paid into your Wise account, into your hands in Nigeria?
Cos I believe since they banned transactions to Nigeria, you can't withdraw to any Nigerian bank, whether with a regular bank account or a domiciliary account.
So how do you get your money out of Wise?

Same way you do for any other e-currency, simplest way is to sell to exchangers at good rates, but always do your due diligence...
