The major reason Russia invaded was because Ukraine wanted to join NATO and EU. The two bodies have refused to accept them, and the war has even made it worse. You need a strong military to be part of NATO, Russia has destroyed most of it. You need a stable economy to be part of EU, Russia has also destroyed that. What has happened to Ukraine now, they won't recover from it in 20 years.
Even if Ukraine wins this war, which is highly unlikely, they have lost too much already.

EU has already said they have gotten to the height of sanctions against Russia. It can't be worse for Russia than this.
Because of same sanctions, USA has the highest inflation rate in 40 years, prices of crude oil and gas have record highs. Russia, being the supplier of almost half of crude oil, coal and gas to the whole of Europe, cannot go down even if they lose the war. The only problem they can have is societal breakdown that would oust Putin and bring in someone that can't handle international politics like he did.
EU is now trying hard to get rid of Russian fossil fuels but the only costless option is renewable energy, which is like doing away with carbon fuels totally, and it's decades away.

The objective of this operation was never about Kiev. The pressure on Kiev is to force a political concession from the Ukrainian government with regards to Crimea and the Donbass.

The real objectives in no particular order seem to be

1. Liberation of the Donbass up their original borders
2. Demilitarization and Degrading of Ukraine's military capabilities.
3. Relieving the Siege of Crimea - through unblocking of the canals and linking it to the Dnieper river. That's why they took Kherson city.
4. Creating a land bridge from Crimea through Donbass all the way to Rostov in Russia. This is why conquering Mariupol is key.
5. Extending the land bridge westwards from Crimea to Odessa by conquering Mykolaiv, which was a major shipyard in Soviet times. Doing this will effectively deprive Ukraine from access to the sea and make it a landlocked country.
6. Destroy the Azov Battalion in Donbass. They are all now in Mariupol. Those in Volnovakha have been killed or surrendered.
7. Capture all Nuclear powerplants in Ukraine - to prevent Ukraine from having access to materials to create weapons.

All of the above objectives are largely being achieved albeit slowly due to resistance.

The attacks on Kharkiv, Sumy, Chernihiv and other cities in the North are to tie down Ukrainian forces and prevent them from coming to the South.

Very good strategic goals by the Russia military.

No wonder the attacks are slow but they are achieving it one after the other. The Eastern Ukraine is where the real battleground because it has access to the black sea.

If Russia achieve these goals. Ukraine is finished.

Few days ago I was trying to let you know, Russia gameplan is to encircle before bombardment,now they have surrounded Kiev,I remember you keep mentioning Kiev that day...see I'm neutral in this case and I don't support the war but what I was fighting against that day is low coverage and any small thing they'll portray like Ukraine is winning the conflict, they're not. And the worst part is Ukraine president shouldn't have allowed that country to go to war with Russia,he overestimated the help from the West, he'll flee that city in the coming weeks. I'd advise you follow up the conflict elsewhere online. And I do hope they found peace because people are dying in their numbers.
