He resigned from the party and contested on the platform of another party without losing his seat. Whether the party is Connecticut for Lieberman or Republican Party doesn’t change the fact that he left the party that got him elected and joined another party.

Arlen Spectre was an incumbent Republican senator for 30 years. He was an incumbent senator elected on the platform of Republican Party when he defected to the Democratic Party in 2009. He did not lose his seat when he decamped.

The right to freedom of association is a constitutional right that can’t be denied. All over the world, elected politicians defect for various reasons. Nigeria is not an exception.

Again, the Supreme Court already ruled on this matter in Atiku’s case. The president, vp, governors and deputy governors cannot lose their office for simply changing parties.
