We used an ol android 2.2.3 LG E405, it ran smoothly without a battery,just the USB power cord connected to a charger. So are there any modern phones that behave like this?

There's nothing wrong with what he wrote. OP, I haven't seen phones that could do that for a long time now. Used to love it back in the day. Maybe it is because the power requirements of phones have increased.
