'I know the kid' - Eguavoen gives reason for not including Hapoel Jerusalem GK “Adebayo Adeleye”

Augustine Eguavoen has said that Hapoel Jerusalem goalkeeper Adebayo Adeleye was omitted from the Super Eagles squad to face Ghana in the 2022 World Cup playoff later this month because it's not the right time to try out new players.

Sparta Rotterdam's Maduka Okoye, Omonia Nicosia's Francis Uzoho and Kaizer Chiefs' Daniel Akpeyi are the three goalkeepers given the nod by Eguavoen, leaving the likes of John Noble, Sebastian Osigwe, Mathew Yakubu and Adeleye out in the cold.

Adeleye has embarked on a public relations campaign aimed at getting an invite to the Super Eagles, but the 21-year-old has lost his starting spot at Hapoel Jerusalem to Yonathan Shabi in the last four games so there is no strong case for him to be selected at the moment.

Eguavoen suggested that his former pupil may be considered for future games ahead of the World Cup, if Nigeria see off Ghana in the playoff.

"I think I have vast knowledge about everyone. Adebayo was in my U17 team that I took to South Africa some years ago so I know the kid, " Eguavoen said to Elegbete TV Sports.

"We're playing Ghana now, it's not a friendly game, you cannot just bring in somebody new into the fray right now.

"Like I said I have a list of a lot of players but we are looking for the appropriate time to give them that opportunity.

"If that window comes we might change the entire team and play with a fresh team and by so doing before the World Cup, hopefully by the grace of God we qualify with hard work, and then we can now select the best for the World Cup".

Adeleye has posted four clean sheets while conceding 33 goals in 22 Ligat ha'Al appearances for a Hapoel Jerusalem side who are battling relegation.

I think Eguavoen at this point needs to shut up. He talks way too much.

Do the talk on the pitch and not media houses. He should be planning and strategizing with his assistants on the game next week.

So if a journalist sees Eguavoen and ask him a question, he should stay mute?

Have you ever seen a coach turn down an interview? Go to sports section and see repeated comments by top coaches. I guess they do not do their talking on the field.

I am still trying to understand what is wrong in a coach looking for players that suit his philosophy.

It should impress people to note that the coach believes the team can improve and is still searching for the right players to suit what he has in mind.

The Brazilians still rave about the squad that had Socrates and Zico. A lot of Brazilian coaches use that pattern of play as a template for their teams.

So I wonder why Eguavoen looking for midfielders with the quality of Oliha and Adepoju bothers people.

For me, I find it interesting and would like to look into what made these players special.

1.That's the problem, Eguavoen is hung up on the past and is too player centric.

A good coach harnesses the talents at his disposal and adopts tactics suited to their strengths and to neutralize the opponents.

For example, Tunisia was depleted and without 12 players (some of them key players) when they played us at the AFCON. The coach did not whine. Instead, he adopted a tactical formation that overloaded the midfield, played close & compact, cut off our wingplay by double marking our wingers and got the win.

2. Eguavoen is misyarning and making gaffes all over the place.

➡️Admitting some players were invited to pacify certain people & interests

➡️Saying he has not traveled to watch some players play live and that's why they were not invited.

That's a nonsensical statement. This is 2022 for crying out loud and with the internet one can comfortably watch matches in the comfort of his/her living room and assess players.

➡️Hyping a retired player with questionable commitment and trying to bring him back into the fold

➡️Saying he knows his starting 11 against Ghana when the players have not reported to camp and had any training.

➡️Saying he cannot play through the middle (midfield) because he lacks players like Mutiu Adepoju and the late Thompson Oliha.

When you juxtapose the last two statements, you'll realize Eguavoen has already given away his formation and tactics for the game against ghana

Eguavoen no try abeg.

By the way, there was nothing special in Thompson Oliha and Mutiu Adepoju. It's just Eguavoen and his nostalgia for the past.

Hindsight is 20/20 because now the same people that were criticizing gernot rohr for not understanding Nigeria football identity and praising Eguavoen is speaking differently
please I never criticized Rohr for not playing ‘our style’, I don’t even believed in whatever that means, but Eguavoen is acting like he’s stuck in the 90s. Imagine Pep saying I’m searching for a CB like Koeman.

Hmmm.

I'd advise you watch the game with less excitement to manage your expectation.
The game can go either ways.

Besides Eguavon doesn't seem to inspire much confidence after throwing away that cheap game to Tunisia.

It's not all about playing exciting attacking football. Rather it is about knowing what to expect from each opponent and how to react to the game effectively.
To be honest, he reacted well I that Tunisia match. Bringing on Iwobi and Sadiq was a game changer but the red card spoilt everything.
What I'm finding boring now is his obessiveness with the 1994 eagles.

Football today is player centric. What he stressed on is what we refer to as the FREE 8. He wants two players that are good along the length of the field.

It is what Manchester City has in De Bruyne, Gundogan and Bernardo Silva.

Eguavoen was not whining but explaining to the Journo that he is still searching.

By the way, Guardiola repeatedly talks of the influence of Johann Cruyff on him. He influenced Guardiola's thinking pattern and played a big part in Guardiola's coaching style. Will you say Guardiola is hung up on the past?

Erik Ten Hag, current boss of Ajax has a large frame of Rinus Michels picture on his office wall. This was the coach that made revolutionary tactical adjustments that had an impact in the modern game today. I think he was awarded coach of the century and was Johann Cruyff's manager at Ajax, Barcelona and the Dutch National team.

Will you criticise Erik Ten Hag for being obsessed with the past football style and it having influence on his game?

Some fans (especially here in Nairaland) have given up on the team handlers because of the Tunisian game!
Yet they worshipped Pep and klop who do lost too to relegation struggling teams!!

By the way, Eguavoen is saying he plays tactics to the strength of the players at his disposal but if he had players with the qualities of Thompson Oliha and Mutiu Adepoju, he will switch tactics to the strength of the team.

Nothing wrong there.

Guardiola once said he hardly plays two strikers in the team because of Mendy hardly being available.

There is nothing wrong in the Super Eagles boss statement.

If I had the chance to advise the Eguavoen on this box-to-box issue, I will advise him to look into Ola Aina.

Ola Aina is one player that I like his skillsets that cut across from the defense to the attack. He is refreshing on the ball, good at marking, gets to the top of the field, and returns with ease.

When Pep Guardiola faced this kind of issue at Bayern Munich and needed an intelligent defensive midfielder, he converted Lahm from a full back to a defensive midfielder and Lahm delivered. It led to him getting played in that role in the national team.

I believe Ola Aina can plug this gap and I hope the coach experiments with it during one of the friendly matches that we will have.

Aside Eguavoen talking about his team, tactics and so on .....he needs to show some level of innovation and flexibility in his tactical approach.

The Ghanaians are most likely going to adopt the Tunisian template at AFCON against us because it suits them perfectly as the underdog. Wouldn't be surprised if Ghana lines up in a 4-5-1 formation, defending deep and relying on counters.

That's exactly how they'll play.

Playing an open all out attacking formation against us will be suicidal for them cos of our fast & skillful forward players.

...... and I am not sure Eguavoen knows how to counter that formation.

I do not think any coach knows how to break a compact defensive setup easily. We just saw Manchester City lose points against Crystal Palace who played this way.

Even Liverpool drop points against deep playing teams.

We hope we find a way to break it. My proposal is for us to work on corners. We need to train effectively on executing corners but also keep a tidy setup, so we do not get hit on counters during corners.

Playing pattern:
Get the ball to wide players often and get to the corner line and force corners.

Early execution of the corner will open the Ghanaians.

We should also consider shooting from long range with curling shots.

You defend Eguavoen too much bro. Even in very unnecessary situations, you'll still type a long speech. Are you now saying that Guardiola cannot break any low block easily because he lost to Crystal Palace. Hansi flick too?

I believe in Eguavoen but he's beginning to make very clueless statements of recent. Imagine saying that the reason you didn't invite dessers is because you have not been watching him. Then again he said that he knows his first eleven.

Those two statements already show a serious problem. Eguavoen may actually not be watching Nigerian players well enough. That's why he can have a fixed eleven in his head. He may not even be watching their games. That's not a good thing oh.

Actually he will not , The current left back is Antonee Robinson, in 2020 a £10 million transfer to AC Milan failed to Materialize on account of irregular heart rhythm on his medical. When he played for Wigan athletic in the Championship.

He is a USA international with 22+ caps, as you know USA is ranked 13 and Nigeria 32 by FIFA. In my opinion he is considerably better than Zaidu.

Elijah Adebayo is way better than him who has 13 goals in the Championship for Luton Town.

KC cannot be on the same page Ighalo, Osaze and Yakubu.

Dennis has scored more goals in one season than KC scored in the EPL in three seasons.

Dennis has not needed three seasons of Mediocrity to wake up and be counted.

KC has gone back to his former mediocre self so far 2 goals this season .

Please this is a very pedestrian criteria.

It will be like saying Nigeria is higher than Canada in the FIFA ranking therefore Zaidu is better than Alphonso Davies.

Zaidu is not a world class LB but disrespecting someone who features consistently for his club in European competition is not it.

Even Maguire who has been consistently dropping clangers lately won't be so disrespected to the extent of saying players in Fulham are better than him.

My goodness see analysis.

I doubt if Zaidu will get into any EPL club.

Ndidi has not been outstanding this season he is a very long way from world class.

Victor O, plays with fiery rage and Aggression I have not seen in any player. He is truly relentless in his pursuit of the goal. He is not the best technically speaking and his goal tally is not outstanding.

However, in a different team that plays him as a True no 9 , he will score goals a lot more I think. But he is till very far off world class.

If the yardstick to determine a good player is playing in the EPL I wonder why We haven't seen Lewandowski or Benzema in the EPL. Some of Us here are also EPL fan too, can You please stop the noise about the EPL every now and then and focus on the player?

Actually he will not , The current left back is Antonee Robinson, in 2020 a £10 million transfer to AC Milan failed to Materialize on account of irregular heart rhythm on his medical. When he played for Wigan athletic in the Championship.

He is a USA international with 22+ caps, as you know USA is ranked 13 and Nigeria 32 by FIFA. In my opinion he is considerably better than Zaidu.

It's on that basis I say he is not good enough to get into the Fulham team.

No Fulham player will start at Porto ,But yet zaidu won’t get into Fulham team ,you must be very silly

That’s how you would have said Luis Diaz won’t get into Fulham team because the Portuguese league is weak but he got into Liverpool team

Fulham is a useless club ,the last time I checked club rankings even leganes at the Spanish second division are rated ahead of them

Anntonee Robinson is so good yet he still plays at the championship and no epl club

Stop clowning and disgracing Yourself here and stop this your Fulham nonsense

You actually don’t even watch football because you spew to much nonsense ,even Fulham players won’t agree with the stupid trash you are talking here

Common get out of this place till you start making sense

Rubbish

Dennis is an average player, the way he's hyped here as the best thing to happen to the SE as if he has been brilliant for at least 3 seasons. There is nothing Dennis is doing in the EPL that the likes of Ighalo, iheanacho, Osaze and yakubu have not done.
Dennis might be an average player but he is not hyped here abeg

We didn’t tell you guys he is the best thing to ever happen to the eagles ,we are telling you guys that he is doing well for watford and deserves to be invited to the eagles

So make you cool down biko
