Dave Umahi: If Votes Belong To Political Parties, Then Why Should Political Part by Mandem111(op): 12:56am On Mar 23, 2022
One of the popular political discussions in Nigeria at this time is the removal of David Umahi as the governor of Ebonyi State by a federal high court sitting in Abuja. Umahi and his deputy, Eric Igwe, were sacked by the court two weeks ago for defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC) after winning the 2019 gubernatorial election under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The court ruled that the votes cast in an election belong to political parties and not the candidates who participated in the election. This means that Umahi can't transfer the victory of the PDP in the 2019 gubernatorial election to the ruling party.

However, in my opinion, the court shouldn't sack elected officials because they joined another political party after an election.

The argument of the court that votes cast in an election belong to political parties is not strong enough to sack the governor and the lawmakers. The fact that political parties must present candidates to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for an election means that the votes cast in the election belong to the candidates.

Names of parties not candidates appear on the ballot

People vote for a party's manifesto

If an elected official decide to leave a party, he must also leave the office.

I like Umahi but truth is truth

So who buys the form for the election, is it the individual candidate or their political party that purchases the form?

Genuine question: Who sells the forms for elections, is it the political party or INEC?

Product of poor education. Go and study what is call agent and principal. If a player is selected to join super eagles to Europe for World cup, as a Nigerian player, then when he has played at the qualifier, he now defect to English side. Then will FIFA still accept him to continue to play because he was selected to play in the first place and since his name is on the list of World cup player, he can continue? Use your common sense. As Umahi for his certificate of returns, it has PDP and not APC.

A party is a club.

You can't get on the pitch score a goal against your club then you start celebrating.

Believe it or not if Umahi has contested under APC, he couldn't have won the governor seat of Ebonyi State.

That shows you how far political party can go in winning election for it's members.

So to say, votes belongs to political parties not individuals.

Nigerian constitution does not support or recognize independent candidate, which means before you can contest any election for an elective position in Nigeria, you must belong to a party approved by INEC. With this alone, it means votes cast belongs to the party.

Haven't you heard Tinubu and Buhari urchins sing their usual song that PDP will never rule Nigeria again? Have you ever heard them say this person or persons will never rule Nigeria again? They focus on party not the candidate.

Also Buhari have been contesting and failing to win until he joined APC, a coalition of parties that secured him victory. Did you think Buhari as an individual could have won even the whole North talk of Nigeria?

Also take Soludo as example, he contested under PDP and lost, then he crossed to APGA and he won, meaning APGA gave him the victory. So yes votes belongs to the party and not the candidate okay.

Lastly this new court judgment is a welcomed development, it will help our democracy to grow. It will make politicians to learn to believe in their party and not just using parties as tools to win election, every Nigerian ought to support this judgments.

Bayelsa State Governor ought to go too
