The current wave of increase in basic commodity prices is largely down to lack of diversification. If we had diversified properly and produced more wheat, by now bread flour would have been available to cushion to shortfall from eastern Europe wheat giants. Same thing too with petrol. Lack of refining capacity means we have to depend on developed nation who are battling their own petrol scarcity and won't have time for us.
Instead of truly diversifying, we wanted more oil deposits and were prospecting some phantom basin in the north. Today we are reaping what we sowed.
I wonder what happened to GEJ cassava bread

Prices of everything has gone up everywhere in the world. The US is experiencing the highest level of inflation in more than a generation.
You think Nigeria will be an exception to what's going on in the world?
Even before the war, prices have climbed on virtually everything you can think of in the US, UK and other developed economies.

Na you wey still dey chop bread . Maybe it’s time we all go back to akamu(pap) for breakfast. Say, 50% deviated from bread now, you’ll see the price plummeting. They are having the leverage because they believe no matter the price, we are still going to buy

In similar news which doesn't surprise anyone because the Ukraine war will gradually meet everyone one on the table. Its left for any nation to be paying out subsidy like Nicaragua.

The levy on Russian wheat exports will be increased from $86.4 per ton to $87 in the period from March 30 to April 5, the country’s Ministry of Agriculture said on Friday.

According to the statement, export tax on barley and corn will amount to $75.6 and $58.3 per ton, respectively.

Data shows the export duty rate for wheat and meslin (a mixture of wheat and rye) was calculated at an indicative price of $324.3 per ton, for barley at a price of $293.1, and for corn at $268.3 per ton.

Last summer, the ministry launched the so-called floating tax on wheat, corn, and barley. The measure, which aimed at stabilizing domestic food prices, obliges sellers to register their export contracts on the Moscow Exchange. Based on that information, the Ministry of Agriculture determines the amount of the duty for a period of one week.

You forgot to add that Russia has banned fertilizer exports .

The hunger wey go blow Niggerians dey do frogjump for north korea.

Farmers can't access farms in the north because of Buhari's protected fulanii militia .

Those who can will see fertilizer prices triple that of last year.

Niggeria will soon enter ethiopian tier famine

I said last week, all the China loans we collected was wasted on rubbish infrastructure ie rail, river Niger bridge, train to maradi ($3b). Some nitwitt was yabbing me.
I said while infrastructure was good, it was not wise to take those loans for that as at that time.
The loans should have been taken to get the Chinese to build 2,3,4 brand new refinaries! Those would complement dangotes refinary monopoly. It would have sorted out the issue of using our foreign earnings to import petrol! That would have helped fee up our fx, increase savings and hence affected the value of the naira.
The savings from refineries working could then have been used to build infrastructure.
Are you aware the lag-ibadan, Abuja-kad rail( 2 most busy) cannot pay for its diesel and salaries without gov, much more to servuce the loans.
See, oil price has gone through the roof, oil countries are celebrating, Angola currency gained 20% to the dollar last week, foreign reserves are being filled up with hard currency. But no, our case if different. We made a budget with $50 oil price, now oil is over $120, where is the gain? Oh, we are using it to import fuel, and naira is loosing value. Now ₦600 to $1 and rising. NO BE JUJU BE THAT?
Now let me shock you. Despite all the sanctions on russia. Rouble lost about 40% value. Do you know rouble appreciated lat week again, panicking the Americans to start looking for new sanctions to crush the rouble?
We, no sanctions etc, but our naira is falling! People are getting poorer each day, schools shut down, poverty everywhere. Pick your call now, it will be someone begging for assistance.
