FERNANDEZISBACK: I'm old enough to be your dad, and know far more about the world and its history than you. If you think Nigeria is a ''failed country'', you are clearly a historical illiterate, who can't see beyond his own nose, because a nation that is barely half a century into independence is just at the beginning of its existence. She therefore cannot be pronounced ''failed'' any more than a three year old baby can be said to have failed in life for stumbling. 3 Likes |

Reflect7: What is your definition of a failed state. Because the world definition by UN of a failed state fits Nigeria of today A failed state is a political body that has disintegrated to a point where basic conditions and responsibilities of a sovereign government no longer function properly (see also fragile state and state collapse). A state can also fail if the government loses its legitimacy even if it is performing its functions properly. For a stable state, it is necessary for the government to enjoy both effectiveness and legitimacy. Likewise, when a nation weakens and its standard of living declines, it introduces the possibility of total governmental collapse. The Fund for Peace characterizes a failed state as having the following characteristics: Loss of control of its territory, or of the monopoly on the legitimate use of physical force Erosion of legitimate authority to make collective decisions Inability to provide public services Inability to interact with other states as a full member of the international community 4 Likes 1 Share |

Ttalk: By at least THREE of the criteria hIghlighted in the 4 bolded, the USA itself is a failed state. The US murder rate is over 50,000 per annum, equivalent to 50 Boko Harams operating all at once. 7 in 10 adults bear arms, meaning their FG does not have ''the monopoly on the legitimate use of physical force''. Many parts of rural America are no-go areas for racial minorities, so the US govt has a ''loss of control of territory''. And 80% of nations on Earth are developing countries, with varying degrees of ''inability to provide public services'', so if Nigeria is 'failed' on account of inadequate provision of public services, then so are 80% of countries on Earth. The problem with most of you is that you don't travel to anywhere else on Earth except that tiny strata, that 20% of the world called the developed west, because of your colonial brainwashing that it is the only place worth a visit. So to you, they have come to represent ''the world'', against which you judge yourselves. It is why you consider yourselves ''failed'', because the west is all you know. But IF you traveled the REAL world, where most countries on Earth are located, you would quickly realise that Nigeria is not unique in the developmental challenges it faces. Y'all might even get to lose your national and inferiority complex. 5 Likes |

Reflect7: Let me burst you here before I go to bed. You are quick to point out the comparative strength of Dubai but ignored the strength of Nigeria in areas of Population, land mass, rich culture, large deposit mineral resources , human resources etc. All of which command more value than oil. Does anyone stops Nigeria from earning huge money out of her abundance resources? Since when population becomes a determinant of country's wealth? Why does USA, China with higher population have more wealth, just like small countries like Netherland, Swizerland are not retarding The point you raised are circumstances that can influence country development but they are not the ultimate factor of growth The ultimate to countries growth lies in it's leadership and the citizen, other factors could only aid in fastracking or slow down the growth. In Nigeria's case the country is retrogressing rather than growing and all the point you listed are not responsible for our pathetic state 4 Likes |

Ttalk: Nigeria suffered from the phenomenon known as the Oil Curse. An offshoot of the well-researched Resource Curse, it is the tendency, not unique to Nigeria, where a developing country gets sudden access to oil wealth, and it leads to the gradual neglect of other sectors of the economy, including hitherto booming sectors. According to Wiki, ''many observers have likened the resource curse to the difficulties that befall lottery winners who struggle to manage the complex side-effects of newfound wealth''. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resource_curse The good thing is that Nigeria has learnt from the experience, and is diversifying its economy away from oil, into other growing sectors like agriculture, manufacturing, the services, entertainment, etc. YOUR JOB is to contribute to that diversification, as a member of the private sector, instead of wasting time and energy telling yourselves you are naturally wicked and inferior people with no redemption. 4 Likes |

Ttalk: The TINY populations of the gulf states means that they can afford to live off their oil wealth and literally do nothing else. If you want to know how gargantuan the corruption of the gulf oil elite is, go and visit Millionaires Row in London, or the suburbs of Monaco and Beverly Hills. They simply have enough oil funds to cater to their tiny populations even as they enrich themselves to stupendous levels. UAE (capital, Dubai) has just 9 million people and they export three times the amount of oil Nigeria does. It's like giving a district of Lagos, say Surulere, the entire Nigerian annual oil wealth earnings TIMES THREE, equivalent to about 100 billion dollars a year. Will Surulere not look like heaven on Earth after a couple of months or less? 3 Likes |

Reflect7: Are you for real? Nigeria diversifying into agriculture? How? What has Nigerian done in that aspect? Building few rice mill is what you called diversification? Any sign of growth you see in Agriculture sector is solely private and individual effort? What policy of government point to such diversification? What financial measures are there as a proof of diversification? What government investment in agriculture can be equate to what is used to explore oil in Chad basin? What are the new research and modern institute to promote agricultural development? Where are the market and preservation mechanism to sustain Agriculture product Where are the government incentives, subsidy and grants for agricultural purposes? What are the budget for agriculture in FG and State since agriculture bus in concurrent list? It's like you are confined to theoretical narratives being pushed out but not in the field to know what's up. Nigeria has invested more in oil and gas in the last 15years than it has done to agriculture, so where is the diversification? 6 Likes |

I put it to you that your diversification theory is a mere jingle government feed your likes but not in tandem with the reality on ground. A train was bombed on Monday, Airport and government security facilities are being targeted and you are talking of diversification into agriculture. Tell me, will you as an investor put your money into farming when you are likely to be kidnapped or killed? Will you as a banker give loan to finance a farming project in this terrorist ravaged country? How do you explain farmers sharing farm products with bandits and criminals for the safety of his life, or you want to feign that is make up story that is not happening in Nigeria? I asked you, where is the diversification into agriculture in this state of nation 5 Likes |

Reflect7:You're the dumb cretin if you say that Nigeria started developing in 1960. Which school taught you that ? Your school fees may need to be refunded. Had Nigeria simply continued its growth trajectory since 1960, Nigeria would have been far far ahead of South Africa, India, Brazil, etc. In 1960, Nigeria was ranked far above South Africa in terms of future potential. Nigeria was ranked higher than South Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia in future potentials. India and Brazil were Nigeria's peers in 1960. 5 Likes |

I know it's really hard for Nigerians to love their country because of the way things are going, and the not caring attitude of our leaders. But the inferiority complex is too much, Reflect7 has mentioned so many reasons as to the development of other countries that are way ahead of us, but many of us just decide to believe that being white means being superior which is not so. I would have called you lot white supremacist but you're not even white, heck you're a black man like me. As much as I don't agree to his words on government action towards diversification, but the guy has said nothing but the truth. Many people don't even know Africa's history and how we got to this level, all they just want to see is miracle. Most SouthAsian countries are still developing economies like ours but they love their country and are good compatriots, India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Indonesia, Vietnam et al. Other countries in Africa that are as bad as ours still believe in their country, DR Congo is a good example. Let's stop the hatred of our fathers land and our skin color, it won't do us any good neither will it make things better. We need to change the way we reason in this country, if we all lose hope in the country and believe it's not going to get better, honestly it won't. But we can all keep doing our quota to making this country a better place, discourage voting apathy, and if you want to travel abroad that's also good you can use the money earned to establish businesses back home. 1 Like |

Readability: Doing that quota is what a lot of people find difficult to do. Nigerians behave so badly and then want leadership to automatically provide a civil and sane society for them out of the blues. Nigerians cannot wait in line for anything. They by themselves over the years corrupted the public services by their hasty attitude to get things done ahead of others by any means possible. The so called decadence happening in Nigeria was caused by Nigerians themselves not people from Pluto. Apple's come from apples. The so called leadership, myopic people are trying to lay the blame on are also from the people. 95% of Naija people are morally defective is the simple reason we have been getting bad leadership. The rest talking from the back have just not been availed the opportunity to dip their hands in the cookie jar, some of them are worse! The British developed Britain Americans developed America. The Japanese developed Japan. The Chinese 're currently developing their country and taking millions of their people out of poverty. Nigerians, the ball is in your court to also develop your country. 3 Likes 1 Share |

The problem of Nigeria and other Africa countries is Democracy. The moment Europeans force it on any African countries, hence its collapse look at Libya, Nigeria etc. What most people don't know is that Africans and Arabs have the same ancestral background as such their society is patriarchal from the start. If Democracy hasn't been forced on some naturally blessed African countries like Nigeria, Libya, she'd have developed to the pace of Dubai, Riyadh, Abu Dhabi etc. The colonials(Europeans) only came to steal their resources and makes them inferior in thinking, then cause tribal feuds among them. There's no gainsaying that the major economic development witnessed in this country was done by the military government. Africa in the face of Europeans is like someone that was thrown inside a ditch, and whilst he tries to come out, the Europeans stand at the top of the ditch and keeps firing her with an arrow so as never to come out. Most people just clamour about while Africa is not developed not knowing that she was a victim of colonial masters. Yes! Europeans will never allow Africa to develop in their face. It's a sad reality! Only Northern Africa has escape this dungeon since they form an alliance with middle eastern nations - MENA. As such they are being supported heavily by the rich Arab nations. Just look at development going in in Egypt, Morroco, Algeria, Mauritius, Seychelles etc. Go read the Berlin conference of 1884-85 where the fate of Africa was determined by European nations while no Africa nations/leaders were present. Go read books like; How Europe underdeveloped Africa, What Britain did to Nigeria, Africa in Bondage etc. The issue is deeper than what you see on TV. The book below is a must read! 1 Like
