Fox News viewers who were paid to watch CNN for 30 days eventually became more skeptical and less likely to buy into fake news, according to a new study.

The study titled “The manifold effects of partisan media on viewers’ beliefs and attitudes: A field experiment with Fox News viewers” by David E Brockman and Joshua L Kalla was conducted in September 2020 and published last week.

“Of 763 qualifying participants, we then randomised 40 per cent to treatment group. To change the slant of their media diet, we offered treatment group participants $15 per hour to watch 7 hours of CNN per week, during Sept. 2020, prioritising the hours at which participants indicated they typically watched Fox News,” the study said.

The study found changes in attitudes and policy preferences about Covid-19, evaluations of then president Donald Trump and Republican candidates as well as elected officials.

“Despite regular Fox viewers being largely strong partisans, we found manifold effects of changing the slant of their media diets on their factual beliefs, attitudes, perceptions of issues’ importance, and overall political views,” the authors of the study said.

Fox News covered racial issues “extensively but selectively about Biden and other Democrats’ supposed positions on them and about outbreaks of violence at protests for racial justice in American cities”. The study found that CNN provided little information about either.

The two networks also covered the issue of voting by mail, but again differed on the information provided about it in addition to offering different frames.

A survey was conducted after three days on the participants, which captured significant shifts in beliefs.

Sanctions are put in place to destroy the economy which mostly does affect the people. The idea is that when the people suffer they will blame their leaders and revolt. But perhaps because we do not revolt successfully in Nigeria, you think Russians are like you who are ready to put up with being made to disappear so you'd rather shut up than fight for your rights. In Russia, where the citizens who care do express their hurt, it will be at their own "people who call the shots" that they will express it to, and they will not express it peacefully but loud enough so that the "people who call the shots" will have to care for the safety of their own heads!

Russians have not been as hoodwinked as North Koreans and Syrians have been, Ben. And while Sanctions might not "deter the idiots ruling those nations", sanctions seriously compromise the damage and hurt "the idiots ruling those nations" could have inflicted if nothing was done.

If nothing were done to Russia, Ukraine might have been Russia today, which would only further empower Putin to threaten further, and North Korea's Kim might have tried it on with South Korea by now too if not for sanctions against Putin. As for Syria, sanctions stop them getting involved in Israel.

This follows a huge share buyback binge initiated in October by the now departed CEO Kevin Johnson, who’d had this job since 2017. In October, the company announced that it would pay $20 billion in share buybacks and dividends.

Think of all the things Starbucks could have done since 2017 with the $22 billion in cash it blew, wasted, and incinerated on share buybacks. Two of the things it could have done were pointed out by the new old CEO Schultz today: take better care of its employees and stores.
