Fellow Nairalanders,

Felt like showing you the cassava I harvested this morning from my plot of land. Can't recollect exactly when I planted them in 2020 or early 2021, but was very impressed with what I got from about 6 stems as they produced very big tubers.

So, taking them home for my able wife to soak them in water to prepare it for Fufu, Santana, Akpu, 6 to 6 as it called in most places, so as to augment our staple food for the time being. Glory be to God.

So, join us for the Fufu party.

Lala, what do you think?

N. B. My camera quality is not high, so you may not enjoy the imagery.

It's not much, but I can understand why you're excited, reaping what you sowed.

I believe there's a farmer in all of us, as long as we love food.
I hope to eat something that I planted someday.

Na waoh for you. Did you hear me say FARM? This was just from about 6 stems as a lot of them got rotten as a result of not harvesting on time

Amen. God bless you. I didn't actually post about the quantity but just about the sizes of the Tubers.

Yeah, as it was actually a random planting. I never intended to plant them, but I am very pleased with the result today especially with the biggest one that was about 2 feet long

Yeah, at least considering the fact they were never intended to be planted in the first place. Thanks

Nice one. I'll be thrilled to behold such too considering the circumstances, don't let anyone make you feel otherwise. May our efforts never be in vain.

Not really, it was just a random planting as it was not intended previously. Thank you

If the land is still not in use, you can plant things like peppers on it.
They grow quite fast.

Make I ask again, why container gardening never take off in Nigeria abeg? undecided

People can grow pepper, tomatoes, potatoes, green onions, lettuce, even ugwu sef, right there in their homes, but why don't folks do this still in Nigeria? undecided

As in!

I think a campaign should be started to educate people on that.
And growing those things is healthy for the mind too.

It's just strange to me that in a country where people complain still of starvation being a reality that container gardening isnt already common place. undecided

Healthy both for the mind and for the pocket. I recall one of my mummy's friends had a garden right outside of her door where she would get us ugwu, scent leaves, tomatoes and pepper from regularly. And maybe one yam plant per year. It wasn't a big garden at all but she had it stocked all year round - she was a seamstress and worked from her living room so she could quickly make soup by fishing from one of those vendors who walked through residential areas with their ware on their head to feed us anytime she had to babysit us. undecided

We stayed over at her place when my mum had other errands to run and so got used to respecting her garden and the use for it. undecided

When I speak to folks in Nigeria about gardening, I get some of the saddest responses - no space, no time, no this and that. And I wonder if they even realize how ridiculous such excuses really are. undecided

When we were little, planting seeds and watching them grow was so much fun.
Tending to the plants made us responsible and it was fulfilling.

Truly, there are no excuses to not having even a herb plant.
Some of my favourite chefs have at least a herb plant right there in their kitchen, usually by the window.

Indeed! undecided

I remember we planted our own minigarden at one time on our balcony. Had tomatoes and pepper there, right beside the other potted flowers. It was great to have. undecided

I recall we also had these scented leaf bushes that grew right along the fence my mum regularly sent us to go get leaves for cooking from. Along the same fence, ewedu and waterless dey dey plenty particular during the summer months. It was like our own garden back there. undecided

Here, we have a garden(containers) in the back and even by the kitchen window. Convenient especially for the winter months when we can easily bring them in the house to the back sitting area, out of the cold. undecided

No it doesn't! undecided

Mosquitoes don't feed on plants and a well-drained garden is no real home for them either. undecided
