Cambridge and Oxford universities began as people congregating in those cities to learn from each other just as we do here and then a university evolved.

Not every one goes to Nairaland University, or school even. Some would rather not learn so they may believe in peace. Fortunately, and unfortunately for some, the darkness of ignorance can not prevail against educating light shining professors like yourself, as is written in the Book.

Hhmm.... Having accounts on certain social networks is simply a matter of choice. We aren't necessarily better than those who don't have accounts on Nairaland. They are neither ignorant nor adamant. They might just have other ways of getting information that they find more convenient. It is not a darkness vs light combat. It's just social media. Let's not over-philosophize it.

God rest Wale's soul, the very man who introduced me to nairaland way back. May his soul continue to rest in peace.

I agree 100%

As someone who has lived all his life in calabar, I have hardly met anyone who knows about nairaland.... It's just like a place everyone knows about but just choose to ignore.

You would be surprised that many know but pretend not to know anything like nairaland so that you won't ask for their moniker. I'm speaking as a culprit myself grin undecided. Ive also caught someone logged in to nairaland and she lied that she reads occasionally as a guest

I joined Nairaland in 2009 back when it was Discussion Forum. Many phones didn't have internet access, most people didn't know how to use the few that did, and data was expensive for those who knew how to use it.

1 hr in a cafe cost 120 - 150, which was equivalent to a dollar back then. (That's 400 - 600 naira today)

So we had a lot of intelligent people here since no one would waste their funds to come online to post nonsense:

The Politics section was filled with intelligent discussions free of any form of name-calling. They even had a Wall of Shame where they posted useless politicians every month. Even the Romance section where you find the most ridiculous people was very sane back then. I remember 190 very well. Crazy funny guy.

And very intelligent discussion on politics and even religion used to come to the front page. I remember one of such happened between Logicboy and one Mr Noni, I think. They had a match and then a re-match.

Things have changed today, every lunatic can afford data. NL struggled at a time and went from a discussion forum to a forum/news site, blog, gossip blog, and is now some kind of blog-social media hybrid but is still run like a forum.

And that is the problem:

Why should I visit NL instead of a standard blog or some Instagram blogger, for the latest news and gists?

Why should I visit NL instead of Twitter to discuss the latest news and hold other reasonable discussions?

Posting even a basic thread here is insane. I spent hours posting a research thread the other day about P&ID's lawsuit with the Nigerian government. I had to upload the images on my previous posts here on NL and then link back to them so that I could put images in-between texts and not at the bottom.

NL needs to upgrade. It doesn't need to be aggressive but the current site has terrible user experience. I know Seun doesn't want to change the site because he's concerned about load speed and likes leaning to the side of what works rather than taking risks, to trying new things, but this is something he needs to do.

A good start is to introduce dynamic homepages where everyone sees different topics on the homepage depending on their interest. Or why should we all see the same homepage? Everyone wants different things.

Plus NLs poor moderation and I don't care attitude toward religious and tribal lunatics isn't helping either. In fact, this sort of behavior was what killed popular US forums and anonymous sites, and NL is slowly going that way too.

NLs dominant age group is between 25 and 35, and without newbies, this site would go with our generation, that's if it lasts with it.

I don't even know why and how I'm still here even after all the haters that full here and the worst thing is that I'm Fulani and a Muslim. grin when I first joined it wasn't easy because of all the hurtful things I see, it even got to the point that when I see a thread about Muslims or Fulani/hausa people I don't open it so my mood will not spoil. but now, I no send anybody papa. if you like insult me from now till tomorrow e no go move me. grin

It was during the sit-at-home period. It was very filled then, people were home so they had to tune somewhere to keep sanity. I've seen people visiting nairaland, but most hide it. They always hide it, I don't know why, seen like 6 or 7 thereabout, pressing their phone under desk, surfing nairaland. Maybe to avoid asking for moniker.
