Tu-22M3 was destroyed by Buk missile defense system by GA in 2008. It cost about $1.5 billion.

Please permit me to educate you a little, if you will.

First of all, i believe because the TU-22 bomber and other variants of it being called range aircrafts made you believe they were designed to be used on only long range missions.

Long range bombers are termed long ranged because of their capability to go deep into enemy territory and drop those massive bombs they are packed with and return safely because unlike other aircrafts, they have capability to remain in the air for hours or even days before refueling.

Ukraine being a close country to Russia shouldn't make the russians remove using the bomber off the table. Bombers are the only aircrafts that can carry and deliver extremely devastating and high yield explosive bombs and even including air launched missiles like other attack and air superiority aircrafts. So like other aircrafts, Bombers can be used on missions to level dug in targets. USA used their long range bombers alot to pummel Baghdad, the capital city of Iraq. Would you say, "Oh, because the airport where the bombers are stationed is just a few kilometers away from Baghdad, hence those bombers should not be used?"

The TU22M3s are actually easier to shoot down with Ukraines S-300 missiles. The fact that they are launching bombs from very high up also means the strikes are not precision strikes which is good for combatants on the ground but not so good for harmless civillians.

Can you bet with me that 2 or 3 of these strategic bombers are coming down within a month ...over Belarus or Russia?
