Presidential Pardon: Morale Low In Handling High-Profiled Cases – EFCC, ICPC Prosecutors

Some operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) handling high-profiled cases for the commission in various courts have said their morale is becoming lower than before due to a recent presidential pardon.

The operatives, who spoke on Sunday to Daily Trust anonymously in separate interviews, said their dampened morale was based on the recent Presidential pardon granted to the former governors of Plateau and Taraba States, Joshua Dariye and Jolly Nyame respectively.

Dariye and Nyame were jailed for embezzling N1.16bn and N1.6bn, respectively totalling N2.76bn.

It would be recalled that the National Council of State had last Thursday endorsed the pardon of Dariye, Nyame and 157 other convicts following the recommendation of the Presidential Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy.

The 12-member committee, headed by the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, was inaugurated by President Buhari in 2018.

One of the operatives who spoke to Daily Trust said, “It is quite sad that the two former governors could be pardoned despite our sleepless nights to ensure that those people who looted commonwealth didn’t go scot-free. Sincerely, this will definitely affect our zeal to prosecute any PEPs.”

Another operative, in his submission, said, “There is no need to waste millions of Naira in prosecuting political thieves, after all, they will be pardoned if their convictions are finally secure

“I’m still wondering the rationale behind their pardon by the Council of State presided over, by President Muhammadu Buhari.”

Corruption fighting in Nigeria is dependent on who you are. Some people are targeted for Corruption probes even if they are innocent, and some are left to loot in peace with bullion vans even on camera.

Obiano no Tinubu are case studies.

The only thing I scored Buhari low on was security until this presidential pardon nonsense happened.

Buhari has not done well tackling insecurity and corruption... and History will remember him for this.

I still love him though

Buhari is a very corrupt person.....

He has successfully destroyed every sector, from bad economy to bizarre insecurity to unemployment, bad roads, education... This man is a bad omen...

Bread that use to be 200 is now 600, Kings oil 10 litres I normally supplies schools cooperatives for 5400 is now 15850....

Corruption is not THE problem of Nigeria as I have always said...
How can your culture be a problem...

You can imagine the waste of all the campaign resources for years and years, the endless sales pitch, the barrage of anti-corruption propaganda Nigerians were fed endlessly....

What a betrayal... by a party and government that came to power on this singular promise.
It is not only the EFCC that has its morale soured but unfortunately all those who genuinely believed (not the mindless fanatics), but those who voted out of conviction for a better Nigeria and subscribed for its stock but have watched its value sink year on year and is now at junk status...

At the end of it all... you just wonder.... WHAT WAS THE POINT IN REMOVING THE PREVIOUS GOVERNMENT...

If a people cannot hold their elected officials to account and by themselves sail the ship of state to the destination of their own choice, then democracy as a principal tool of development is totally worthless.

We have been saying this on this forum for many years now.
Below is the way to move our darling nation forward and to pay minimum wage of well over #200,000 to hardworking Nigerians.

Excerpts :

4) Institute DEATH PENALTY to proven THEFT OF PUBLIC FUNDS no matter how little, and LIFE Jail Sentences for COLLABORATORS.

With (1) + (2) + (3) & (4), Nigeria would pay a minimum wage of N203,500 comfortably.

GOD BLESS NIGERIA
END OF DISCUSSION!

Hmmm, nice thinking.

But [b]quite impossible.

You only saw number 4 aight?
That's why it is an excerpt.
Nothing is impossible, Never Say Never!!

When you read Point 1, 2 and 3,
You will see this is very very doable.
Have a great week ahead King David.
Nigeria will be great again in our lifetime.

chiomadichie:
I'd substitute 4 for life imprisonment for both offences. Every other thing said makes complete sense and I totally endorse it!
Madam Chioma Adichie,
We are highly honour that your very first and only comment after exactly 2 years and 9 months of joining Nairaland is to 'totally endorse' one of our posts.
That means a lot.
A better Nigeria is all we want.
God bless you ma wherever you are this early Friday morning!

We Rise.

Never thought I would ever agree with you on anything but on this issue you are obviously right. Nice one.
But the imprisonment should include family members and friends. This would encourage whistleblowers.
Interesting.
We disagree to agree.
Everyone has a right to their political affinity.
Know this and know peace ✌️
Stay blessed.

Destinylink:

You made a lot of sense bro, I totally agree with you on this. GOD BLESS NIGERIA
God bless you too Chief Destiny.

GEJ did it to James Ibori and other corrupt SS politicians.. he set that bad precedence when he negotiated Ibori's return from UK to Nigeria so that he (GEJ) can free him which he did..
Why EFCC no talk that time?

Buhari has exposed himself to be a total fraud.

His supporters started by saying he's an ex military man and will tackle insecurity. He failed woefully on that.

Their final defence was "he's a man of integrity and has no iota of corruption". He's finally debunked that rumor by this move.

There's no single substance in that man called Buhari. Everything he touches turns to ashes.

I knew the corruption of this administration as soon as the ministry of humanitarian and disaster management affairs was created with Sadiya positioned to head it. We Nigerians won't grasp the enormity of this until this present government is no longer on seat.

There was never any genuine war on corruption at any point in time to begin with. And as I've said from the beginning of this administration "this is the worst type of government a country can get".
