Interestingly vfx heavy movies may only be good for five to years after the fact. Spiderman 2 is hard on the eyes today. But Conan the barbarian - 90% practical effects looks as fresh or even better than it did decades ago

Practical effects is the way to go. It's more expensive these days that's why many studios prefer CGI as it's become cheaper and better over the years.
