sonofElElyon: You don't treat words in isolation. The expression doesn't just say "beat", it says "beat to death". When a verb is accompanied by an adverb or an adverbial phrase (or a prepositional phrase functioning as an adverb), then it becomes the duty of the adverb or the phrase to modify it. In this particular case, the prepositional phrase "to death" has already modified the verb "beat" to express its severity. It answers the question, "how severely?" Regardless of the verb used, it doesn't get any more severe than that. Moreover, to beat is to strike with something, usually a club. Both words are synonymous and interchangeable in this context. The only reason why one would rather use the verb "club" here is if the writer is trying to be emphatic on the fact that a club was used and nothing else. But then again, Sahara reporters is more interested in emphasizing the fact that the victim died. They want you to read the article if you want to know exactly how it happened. Again, there's absolutely nothing wrong with the title. 1 Like |

WoundedLamb: No need for your epistle.. to beat someone to death doesn't paint as gruesome verbal picture as club to death whether you agree or not.. at any rate to beat could be with just bare hands or knuckles.. club clearly conveys that a weapon (club) was used.. which consists of repeatedly striking thus paints a more gory verbal picture in the mind of the reader.. specificity helps for better verbal picture and therefore better communication. No professional journalist would opt for beat instead of club in this particular instance.. but you have the right to your opinion |
