So, my phone got stolen last week and inside it is my major sim card that I have been using for over 6years.

The line in question is linked to my NIN but the initial Sim registration was done by someone else. I no longer have the sim pack as well.
Ps: I bought the sim as already registered.

So, i went for a welcome-back last week Saturday in MTN Head-Office at UWANI, ENUGU and the guy at the desk told me that since the initial sim registration was done by someone else, that they will have to contact their Lagos office for approval to welcome-back the sim and the whole process will cost me #10,000.
In that same office, my friend did his welcome back two weeks ago for #1k.
A part of me felt that the guy wants to just make extra cash from be because it was just him and another customer service that is sitted far from him that were working that very day.
But I want to be sure if his claims are true.

Pls if you have had any experience like this, enlighten me.
What I want to know is if it will cost that much to welcome back your sim if it wasn't registered to your name even if it is linked to your NIN.
Have you done any welcome back like that?

Call their customer care line for clarification. Very simple. Tell them someone told you welcome back is #10k for sim you got as gift from someone else. They ll enlighten you better. Besides I don't think pre registered sim is allowed. You just dey disturb yourself.

Simple, tell them you now want to register the sim in your name.

All they want is to link a sim card to a valid identity.

Pre-registered Sim is registered by someone else but bought by you. That's the whole idea of nin linkage to sim. That's why it's not allowed anymore. A lot of people will lose their sim particularly those who don't know who registered on the telecom network, the sim they are using.

10k for what? The highest you can retrieve is 1k or 1500 and it will be return to you as recharge card. So you have nothing to loose. That's the format years ago that I visited thier office. So don't fall for 10k ish. Call 180 ASAP.

My old SIM is a 3G SIM. When I make calls, I hear noises, so I decided to do a welcomeback.

The lady said it's 1k, but she needs to check if the name registered with my SIM is the same as my NIN. Unfortunately, the SIM was bearing Musa whatever.

This was a SIM I registered with my details and they even captured me. It was then I realized most of the SIMs we bought were pre-registered with other people's names and the capturing of the new buyers were for formalities.

I asked her if I could change the name and she said no — it can't be changed. She asked me when I lost the SIM and I told her I still have the SIM — I just want to upgrade it from a 3G SIM to a 4G SIM.

It was at this point she said since I have the SIM, it can be changed as long as I can receive SMS with it.

Luckily, she recaptured me, I got an OTP, and it was changed to the name I have in my NIN slip.

In few minutes, it reflected. She told me to install "My Airtel" app and link it there to see if the name has been changed.

I did and voila, it had been changed to my name. "Use it for a month or two before you come back for a welcomeback to a 4G SIM," she said and I happily agreed and went home. She did it for free.

God will punish those people selling pre-registered SIMs and do fake capturing for the new buyers.

Buying a pre-registered sim is totally wrong and dangerous to you.
1. You don't know on whose name it was registered.
2. You don't know if the registrant has prior criminal record

My advise:
1. Please get a new sim
2. Log into your NIN account and remove the sim number from it.
3. If you also used the line for your BVN, approach the bank where you did your BVN and change the number to your new number.

If he can truly do it for you. Forget that amount and pay. I would have paid to get mine retrieved if I had the chance. Because it was my main of nearly 10 years but pre-registered. The customer care agent gave me a resounding NO. And that his job was at risk if he tried such.

@ op it is not possible for you to re-register an already registered line. The agent that requested 10k from you stand a chance of losing his job for trying to circumvent company policy.

How can you cope buying that kind of SIM? What if you need an urgent request to block that sim, will you be able to answer the security question the customer care will ask you?

Only criminal buy pre registered SIM because it will take you nothing to register any sim under your name

Shame
