BREAKING: ASUU Strike: Call Off, Consider Students – Buhari Begs Lecturers by iwaeda(op): 11:58am On May 12, 2022
President Muhammadu Buhari has appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to end the lingering strike.

Buhari urged ASUU to consider the plight of the students and called off the industrial action.

The President made the appeal at the 19th National Productivity Day Celebration and Conferment of National Productivity Order of Merit Award, held at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja.

He also urged the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, to exercise patience as the government tries to resolve the crisis.

Buhari recalled his February 1 directive to His Chief of Staff, Ibrahim Gambari, the Ministers of Education and Labour and Employment, Adamu Adamu and Chris Ngige, respectively, to address the concerns of the striking aggrieved workers’ unions.

On Monday, ASUU has been on strike since February 20222.

But ASUU on Monday extended its ongoing roll-over strike by another three months.

The body is demanding funding for the revitalisation of public universities, the Earned Academic Allowances, the University Transparency Accountability Solution (UTAS) and promotion arrears.

Others include the renegotiation and implementation of the 2009 ASUU-FG Agreement and the inconsistency in the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System.

The 2009 ASUU-FG Agreement, which can be downloaded from link below, is as unworkable as incompetent people saying "Let there be light"!

There's no way Nigeria would find the money required barring selling the universities or charging students so much that most wouldn't afford to be lectured. And if the money is found to pay the lecturers, the students are bound to feel cheated considering the sub par education they are given.

but petrol subsidy money is available by " let there be subsidy"

Opinionated people form opinions and think they are the only ones with brains and all others are idiots and their ideas ar directly from God.
This year Buhari wrote the National Assembly to approve ADDITIONAL trillions of naira for subsidy. which is to be borrowed and that is probably "very realistic and workable"

You do not know more than every one

Let us put facts to narrative.

Rather than the hyperbole of universities needing to be sold

PUT A NUMBER on it

How much are we talking about EXACTLY?

The government is proposing to spend in excess of 4 trillion on petrol subsidy BUT has no money for education

What percentage of the entire budget now goes on subsidy
The simple truth is education is not a priority for Buhari or most Northerners

Even if there is no money doing nothing is not the answer

We need a public debate about how to fund our universities for the next 30 years and that should include the options of privatization etc.

Let NANS, ASUU , government and all political parties sit down and get a consensus
With our population free university education is not realistic but we should debate a way forward

Petrol subsidy is theft, and is the biggest drainer of our resources, and it's not true that "petrol subsidy money is available", unless you mean, available through borrowing that we spend billions servicing.

Cancel petrol subsidy and budget the money into our education system, is what I would propose, but Nigerians, being what we are, would likely get onto the streets and demonstrate against it.

I'm sorry I can't respond to your assumed opinion of me.

Unfortunately, he postponed removing it for fear of the hardship and demonstrations that will follow, forgetting the fact that short term pain would lead to long term gain.

Hopefully, he'd bite the bullet and remove it before he leaves office, though I would not be holding my breathe.

They are all recorded in the aggrement I already posted a link to, along with the stated renumerations.

Now get a hold of the Nigerian budget and let me know if it covers what was agreed. Also state the difference between it and what was agreed.

You might find that there's a gapping gulf between what is agreed and what was budgeted.

And note. The budget is for all levels of education, but is not even enough for primary education, and is no where near what is spent on our stupid petrol subsidy.
