Russia has every right to see NATO as a threat.
Before Putin was in power, there was Russia. Russia helped divide Korea, helped killed US soldiers in Vietnam... Russia you see today has always been like this. So saying IF is just a fantasy.

Soviet Union collapsed economically, they had to go begging USA for assistance upandan that was granted them. They were allowed into the economic system built by the West, sanctions were lifted, cooperation was agreed on economic help, housing, disarmament, reduction of Chemical weapons etc. At the point of collapse, Bush Senior sent them billions in Agricultural aid, economic assistance etc. The West even enacted the NATO-Russia Founding Act and agreed to cooperate in several areas.

But here comes Mr Putin trying to turn the clock back. Some countries like to suck up to the winning countries... it is for their own good. If Russia was so in a good position where they could easily defeat the west, Germany would have been the first nation to join them. this is one of the reasons Obama spied against the PM.

My concern is the risk of a nuclear war, and it's real. Therefore:

(1) NATO and EU must declare loud and clear that Russia's bordering neighbors are not welcome to apply. They should remain neutral as they had been since the collapse of USSR without Russian attacks. Sovereign rights that risk sparking a nuclear war must be forfeited.

(2) Russia should issue a non-aggression guarantee never to attack them militarily as long as they remain non-aligned.

This guarantee should not cover election meddling.
Election meddling is common practice all over the world.
