One of the earliest documents we have outside of the Bible that describes Mary’s life is the Gospel of James, and it depicts Joseph as an older man who was essentially Mary’s guardian. It’s also one of the first documents that declared Mary’s perpetual virginity. The brothers and sisters of Jesus in the bible was referring to those children from Joseph earlier marriage.
