Presently, I drive an old model Toyota RAV4 and a 2003 Subaru Forester. I have changed Mechanics 3 times since July last year. They keep disappointing me. You give your car to a mechanic you consider as experienced, one has to sit down there for him to do the right thing and I don't have the time. Immediately you leave, he ask his boys to do the work and I'm not comfortable with these small boys expertise.
The second one tell lies as if tomorrow won't come. Common parts, he'll tell you is 20k and still charge me high after scraping me financially on parts. The third one will not just do the work except you are there and sometimes I do see up to 4 car owners dragging him.
Please what's your experience with our local mechanics and how have you been coping with them?

Firstly in the world of today, you've got to have a scanner. If your car develops fault you scan it yourself and know what the problem is before going to the mechanic workshop.
Secondly you should have a mechanic for different occasions, like me I have a mechanic that changes my shock absorber brake pads, I have another one if I want to do some serious work on the engine I have another one that changes oil.

You leave ur car to mechanics & go?

Even for car wash, I stay from beginning to d end, same for mechanics.....And one thing about the "ogas". they would listen to ur complaints, check d vehicle, then call them apprentice, tell them what to do, then monitoring & checking them every few minutes. if it's something complicated, they would fix d vehicle while calling the other apprentices to see how it is done( me I just Join & learn too)

Seriously, it's same in every workshop, me I just rapport with d boys, dey help them & learn grin

My mech charges me £40 for an hour labour. The job gets done.

In Nigeria u have good heads who know what they are doing but unfortunately they lack the requisite tools, lack shelter, lack presentation and charge between 3k to 5k for 5 hour job done.
There are really good mechanics in Nigeria, the only thing lacking in them is the available tools. It amazes me the risk they take with their lives to fix cars absent tools. Then there are bad mechanics as well

My neighbor who is a Medical Doctor is one of the best and most sophisticated Mechanic I have ever seen in Nigeria.

This guy knows everything from interior to exterior and engine design.
He was even chatting with some Japanese car developer engineers while repairing my Kia car.

He brought out laptop and connect it to my car and was scanning and doing sophisticated things.

I used to wonder what the hell is this guy doing as a doctor for Christ sake.
His knowledge of repairing cars is crazy

If he was abroad, by now he will be world class car engineer.
Guy can dismantle every piece of your car and reassemble it back without stress.

I left car for Oga to run a few things, shouldn't take him more than 2hours at most. He didn't call back till night, he said that the master brake developed issue.

Oga carry car go flex, I was just watching his movement and listening the banging music in d car through the tracker. Him just go burn my petrol.

The guy come tomorrow dey say him park car for workshop go house. I just dey laugh.

Nigerian mechanics be like women, dem must frustrate u, just find d one wey u fit overlook.

Not only mechanics mostly with people with handwork especially Fashion Designers (Tailors). Some of them can lie, only few of them are trustworthy & have the fear of God.

Meanwhile grin

My advice to every car owners

- Always ask for the faulty spare on your car when your mechanic change them

- Get the part yourself if u know the original

- Stay with your mechanic during repairs

- Don't accept any drinks or hospitality from your mechanic to avoid paying double

- Except major fault, don't allow your car to sleep in mechanic workshop

Naija auto mechanics are necessary evil just like women. You have to shine your eyes very well when dealing with them. Due to my experience in using cars I drag the matter with them.

We don't have mechanic in Nigeria. Just believe it and live long. They re just trying their luck... a second hand kit I used for 6 years in abroad is far better than a six months old Nigerian used car.
