I have to create a new account just for this.

Last week, I had rain fall into my house and soaked my HP laptop. Even though it wasn't deeply affected, I had the fear that sooner or later, some issues will begin to develop. So I began to nurture the mind to buy a new laptop. This time around, I wanted to buy a MacBook.

I never had any knowledge of it's specifications or how it works. So I entered Facebook and went to the marketplace and began to search. I saw different laptops but lots of it were above my budget. I was just able to deep my hand into my savings to pick out 100k.The savings is for my marriage this December.

Chatted with many sellers and had one even come around and I checked and didn't like it because the battery life was just 2hrs and the processor was a duo core..

Then I keep checking, and I saw a new advert. She put 130k and I priced her down and she agreed to keep it at 110k. She claimed it was her laptop and that she was into graphic designing. And she said she was currently at Delta state to deliver a job she was called to do. She promised to come to Abuja on Wednesday but later called to tell me that she wouldn't be able to make it and postponed to Thursday.

On Thursday, she asked me to meet with her at jabi mall Abuja. I set and took a drop there and we met. She showed me the laptop and I check and saw the icloud and I asked her for the password. She said her brother logged that in and that she was trying his number but it w as switched off. And that she will send me the password that night. That was after the transactions and we finally agree to go with 100k.

I got home and made some discovery that the laptop wasn't hers... I checked the email registered to the icloud and the guy used his full names. So I searched and got his phone number and called him but it wasn't reachable. So I texted him and asked if his laptop was stolen and that I was willing to return it back to him. Then, on Friday he called me and told me that just two days ago, one of his workers made away with his gadgets and external drives and even stole other worker's belongings.

My problem now is, I bought the laptop and paid for it. He's willing to repay me but I don't want to have the police involve. He had reported the case to the police and I sent him the girl's two phone numbers and they've started tracking her. I have my fears that the guy will want to turn me in... All I wanted to do was to return the laptop to him and have my money paid to me. I don't like getting involved with the police because I don't trust them. They always have a way of turning things around. And if it will cost me my 100k, I wouldn't mind having my peace and handling everything to God.

I regret ever trying to buy online. I am self learning programming and I am a teacher as well. I learned that MacBook pro are good laptops for programming and efficient. infact, few moments the laptop was with me, I know that the product is really good and worth the price.

Omo. So many scams these days.
Never buy a second hand product or device without receipt.
In a case where the receipt is not available, ensure you involve a 3rd party legal official like the Court. It takes just 1500 to get a court undertaking, to bind your transactions.
If your seller refuses any of the above, it's enough Red Flag

The moment that I realized that the laptop was a stolen laptop. I made a search and discovered the real owner. I contacted him via his phone number asking him if he had his laptop stolen and if he wanted it that he should come and get it.

The laptop was barely two hours in my hands when I made the call to the real owner.

How can I be blamed? Infact, I should have bypassed the icloud but I refused to. I just wanted giving it to the real owner citing the trauma that he'd be going through having his laptop stolen from him.

I need help please..

This evening, I spoke with the guy that owns the laptop and I asked him to come and take the laptop from me and even if he doesn't have the money I used in buying the laptop that he should just come and take it.

His body language is telling me that he wants to have me arrested. The discussion is about me helping to track down the girl. And I don't know the girl. He said the girl started working with him since 2017. He said the girl stole his ATM card and also went away with his phone and other worker's items.

Did I do anything wrong with calling him to return his laptop?

The laptop is still in my position and I want him to come and take it.

I feel like I did the right thing but it seems like I did the wrong thing.

You have nothing too much to worry about since you have tried to be opened enough to the owner, however; you only know your mind and not that of the owner and law doesn't mind about ignorance. What I will advise you to do?
1. Screenshot your transaction and advert of seller on the marketplace and ensure you print necessary information down to show printed copy and marketplace advert down
2. Try to see if you can inform one lawyer, and properbly another police in your jurisdiction just to be available to settle case on case the owner tries to come with police, your lawyer and another police attached to you from your jurisdiction can ware mofty to argue your innocence and quench the case at the same spot provided the owner comes with police and wants you to follow them to write statement.

3. You have nothing to regret, is not bad as you informed the owner, but it would have been better to inform police first, write your statement with them to help you track the lady and get your refund. Although is not totally bad as it is, it would have been worse, if police or owner track the device to you.

4. Even if it becomes a court case, your presence at court will be reduced once you give prosecutor/police your evidence of purchase and other info. Tell the police to be care and record the interrogation if the lady is caught to avoid her implicating you if she is a wicked type

Next time, always be more careful by getting every necessary documents without over trusting the seller.

To the guy; involving police is not the problem but the outcome or the kind of police involved if he is the greedy type you might be roped. I'll advice you get a legal personnel as well. A lawyer or report to the police yourself

You made 2 mistakes.
Buying a stolen laptop and directly contacting the real owner with your real
number and identity.

It is likely what the girl stole in total is much more than the Macbook.
The owner is looking for revenge. If he can't get the girl, he will take you down.

Use social media suggested and preferably find a human right group for protection.
Secondly, you need to get ahead by making a police report of your issue.
Print all your chat history with the thief.
Do you have evidence of payment? Bank transfer. That will be very useful.

Never trust the real owner of the Macbook, be proactive, don't become a victim.

Naija police act unprofessional sometime but you are the main culprit here and the girl in question is no where to be found...... what if the girl is not track down.
Menh!.....this matter deep,na who buy stolen item dey suffer more; ignorant of the law is not an excuse.be more technical in handling this matter cos if police gets hold of you,na big time cash out

The truth is that you will be arrested and labeled an accessory to the crime, notwithstanding your good nature to inform the real owner of the laptop.

I don't know how you can exonerate yourself. You can try to get a lawyer because you will face trial in court.

The way to avoid this is never to buy a used laptop without necessarily papers

go with some elders in your area to a nearby police station and explain what happened. then the real owner will have to come and get his MacBook at the police station in the presence of the elders. NO CASE

Ensure you print all relevant transactions documents
That girl is evil.
She may not want to go down without a fight(to implicate you)

A call recorder would have been very necessary in this case.
Try to have it on similar transactions.
Goodluck!

Some of una dey do over sabi. Why will u even contact the real owner instead of the person you bought it from? You claim not to know much about the laptop but your write up says otherwise. I hope they arrest u. If I am the girl, I will make sure I implicate u

I can bet u that u are the one the police would be tracking now...

Police matter for Nigeria can send u to prison. U made a mistake by calling the guy honestly.
If the guy (the real owner) isn't sincere,I can bet that police that I know would turn this case on your head.

I will advice u to take this laptop to police station nearest to you for sanity. If u report the matter yourself then, they can help u get your money but avoid them tracking u.

Good luck.

Take the laptop to a police station in your area and report directly to the DPO with your proof. Don't go meet anybody, let them come to meet you at the station.

Don't throw it away now, since you've been exposed
