Buhari couldn't win the presidency with the northern votes alone.... He tried 3 consecutive times and failed woefully. It took the betrayal of the south by Tinubu and the west to get Buhari into Aso Rock. And we have seen how backwards that partnership took Nigeria

Nigerian constitution says that you must win at least 25% of votes from a minimum of 24 states to win the presidency. Buhari after 3 attempts couldn't win up to 5% votes outside the north. He was only popular in the north and needed a snitch like Tinubu to help him get the extra 25% in 24 states.

if a candidate is leading in terms of number of votes but he is unable to get the 24 states, they will go for a rerun and after the rerun the candidates with the highest votes will be given the position even if that candidate couldn't get the 24 states.
