Lagos state is the biggest city in the whole Africa. It's bound to generate a lot of money. Partly by being the capital of Nigeria (biggest African country) for 100 years. Tinubu just created soo much avenue to siphon money for himself. No Lagos governor has ever failed because the state is simply too big to fail economically. But when you look at their public infrastructure, you see the failure of his policies.

When you tell some people that Tinubu met Lagos IGR at less than 15bn naira in 1999, they will think I’m capping. Before leaving in 2007, Tinubu had increased the IGR to 83bn. Today Lagos IGR is over 400bn. (The state should even be making money than this if the unaccounted taxes from NURTW and those council guys are going to the right coffers) over 38% of Lagos IGR comes from PAYE.

It was the LIRS method that the FIRS now copied at the federal level to implement.

Tinubu and Lagos APC are far from perfect (I believe they are even too relaxed currently as the political machinery is well oiled) but they are light years ahead of other states in the country.

What’s the achievement in a government enforcing the remittance of tax salary earners are statutorily mandated to pay ?

It’s not like Lagos did anything special to even make those multinationals do business in Lagos , rather it’s cos Lagos is the commercial nerve centre and it’s status as the commercial capital of Nigeria and most top companies have their base majorly here in Lagos.

I agree with you. Lagos just turn into commercial capital of Nigeria from creation.

It’s not as if people laid plans that opened up the state to investors. It’s not as if some people reclaim land from bar beach, open up Lekki, developed it, created a free trade zone there.

In few years when Epe and Ikorodu is fully developed, that’s how we will hear it just happen and they did nothing.

I agree its nothing special, maybe the other states and FG should at least do half of it and make their states economic viable.

Lagos has always been the commercial nerve centre of Nigeria for years. I’m not even an accountant but I can tell U for free that tax reforms over the years along with tax payers education has been responsible for increase in tax generated through personal
Income Tax .

All these things no be achievement wey person dey pop champagne on top. It’s just government doing what it needs to do to survive ( and any corrupt politician can help himself to the generated funds as well )

You even admitted how the NURTW guys extort as much as they want from the hardworking transporters and don’t even account for the funds to any official government agency. That is to show there’s enough money in Lagos begging to be collected due to the large volume of economic activities going on a daily basis .

When we consider what has happened in the last few years in other states I would disagree.

In the 2000s to 2010s mend was attacking oil company staff quarters. Today oil companies have exited warri and most of shells pH operations are run from Lagos.

All this mess in the SE means no one is going to look to set any business there for the next 5 to 10 years. And people already set may be looking for exit.

LASG pulled out all the stops after end sars to ensure looters were identified and punished. It is a deliberate strategy.

I do not run away from FACT because it gives context to an argument.

For the PAYE to go up, the means more people are getting job opportunities and the government has put machinery in place to make sure that their PAYE taxes are collected appropriately.

So it’s 2 things, the government made the state economic viable whereby people start getting jobs, opened up the states to more investment which brings in job opportunities for the people of the states and they also made sure the people are paying their taxes appropriately. (Tax avoidance is high in the country)

So I ask again, how is this not an achievement? If it’s not an achievement, why didn’t the other states do it? Is it because they don’t have the range?

PAYE is a low hanging fruit for government in a country like Nigeria where people do not have a culture of paying tax . Lagos state government simply intensified efforts to pluck those low hanging fruit by dragging as many company as possible into the tax net relying on the PIT act that empowers it to do so.

That was why I said they didn’t do anything special other than collecting what they had not been collecting . That is where alpha beta comes in. We all know the abracdabra this highly revered tax consultant has been doing for Lagos
