It is not as simple as that.

Russia and Ukraine are brotherly nations. There are three brothers forming the Rus Trinity (Russia, Ukraine & Belarus).

Russia has enemies in the West (chiefly the US & UK) and those enemies used Ukraine as a sword to bait Russia by capitalizing on Ukrainian Nationalism to cause a coup in 2014 and thereafter a Civil war thereafter between the Russian speaking East of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Nationalists who are majorly from Western Ukraine. The further threats of inducing Ukraine to join NATO and placing American weapons on Ukrainian territory was a step too far for the Russians.

Hence what we are seeing today.

But Ukraine is a soverigh state they have all the right to decide what they want. The Russian invention is wrong

Geopolitics 101 - Every country has its right to sovereignty, but in exercising such sovereignty, it shouldn't become a threat to others.

For example, Niger Republic is a sovereign nation. What if it officially decides that Boko Haram is not a terrorist organisation but rather are freedom fighters who deserve to be protected, armed and provided with financial support in its struggle against Nigerian forces. What do you think Nigeria's rational response will be? Would we respect Niger's sovereignty and do nothing, or would we immediately mobilize and quickly destroy the threat that Niger Republic is posing to us?

To add to it: Ukraine isn’t even a real country and Ukrainian language is like a mesh of Russian and Polish language hence it’s only spoken in the western part of the country. The language majority of people in that country speak is Russian.

Technically, the only place that’s “Ukraine” in the country is a small part of central Ukraine. The western part was added to it from Poland, Hungary and Romania by the Soviet Union. The southern and eastern parts were added to it from Russia by Lenin and the Bolsheviks. And Crimea was added to it from Russia by Khrushchev who was Ukrainian.

So, in essence, Ukraine is an artificial country created by Russians to serve as a buffer. All it could’ve done is remain a buffer, to avoid problems. Russia is basically just taking its lands back from a country it created since it has refused to serve the purpose it was created for.
