If you know that almost all accounting/finance job openings require ICAN certification or add it as an added advantage and that you stand no chance in landing the job where there are a number of certified or ICAN student candidates then you will realize it is not overrated but a necessity.

Good day fellas!!

Early this morning I log into my LinkedIn account and on my newsfeed I saw series of congratulatory messages and inspiring quotes from peeps on the ICAN results that just got released...

Although, I was happy for them, at least it’s time to enjoy the reward of their handwork and investment paid off...but while on this, my mind was troubled not for bad reasons though, but in that the number of graduating chartered accountant are way high in there numbers and some student still in school are veering to get chartered as well...with this in mind I began to question myself if ICAN as it is today is still worth it or just overrated given the basic law of demand and supply...more chartered accountant plunging into the system with few but highly competitive job around..what does the future hold for this peeps......

Conversely, began to notice that most people who became chartered and those who are one day looking forward to be one are doing for The grams, to feel among, to impress friends and family that they are smart as most saw that only a genius can pass the exam according to them....

The craze to feel counted and ego boosted( not all though) has made the profession too saturated leading most accountant unemployed or underpaid( the ones who saw it as their career life goals)....

With this in mind is the ICAN journey a worthy to embark on( for who who are yet to, myself inclusive) or is it just overrated...

Ps on the level of difficulty attach to the exam how true is it.. for those who has written... I have seen and come across peeps who brag about its difficulty in a bid to make themselves special and downplay the efforts of others who had failed in the exam... this is particularly common among the current crop of ACA...

It there a secret or special kind of strategy and approach one need to know or failed to know that makes the ICAN look as if it’s only surmountable by the genius alone....

It all started from the introduction of NECO and watering down JAMB.

Almost all the degree levels (academics/professional) are watered down

If you think certificate is over rated go and see what our olodo Politicians are going through to get certificate like Buhari and Adeleke


On a more serious note, go and get a master's degree in Business Administration or Economics while you get you ICAN side by side

Powerful Artificial intelligence softwares are taking over Accounting Profession slowly and you need to display more competence in business world to get a job

Take a look at QuickBooks packages, there is no accounting for small business that it can't handle

'Powerful AI' jobs would only take routine, basic data jobs not truly professional accounting expertise.

The Industry is regulated & requiring personal judgements once in a while.

For instance, How does an Electricity distribution company recognize revenue while providing for Bad debts? Good luck finding an AI to help with this now. Maybe in the future, but not now.

I pity the future of these ones because this is just mere paper certificate to pepper friends and family.

This same Scattered accountant will again start looking for jobs where there is none and afterwards blame the incoming President for their failed journey.

The craze for “tech jobs” flying around is even more ridiculous to me..

That is not true. The embatle accountant general is not a chartered accountant with (ICAN) but a certified national accountant with (ANAN).

ICAN is never overated. I am writing ICAN and am still learning data science. When am done coupled with the experience have garnered, i will be demanding 800k as salary. E no easy to get B.sc. M.Sc. ICAN, cognate experience and Data Science skills o.

ICAN is not overrated my brother. While there are gifted/ genius who successfully qualified in two diets, a lot of peeps like me spent 4yrs(8diets) to achieve same feat. I am not where I want to be yet, but I won't be where I am today if I have not qualified as a Chartered Accountant 2yrs ago. Today, I discuss with State Governor, Commissioners and Men of Substance because of ICAN certificate in my kitty.

Stupid question,why don't you go and try your luck first.ACA holders are not even up to 70k both living and the dead.A country like Nigeria should have up to 200 ACAs. Do you know how many doctors, lawyers , certified Engineers and other professions we have in Nigeria. Government ministries and agencies in all the tiers of government can even absorbed all of them not to even talk abt big companies,SMEs

I pray to qualify one day as ACA honestly the exams are very difficult. At the moment I'm in Skills just wrote my first ICAN exam this May diet I hope to do better in November Diet and next year at Professional Level after completing my courses in Skills.
ICAN is not overrated despite the situation of our country it is a big advantage to hold that certificate.

You are right he is certainly not.

But I feel people should stop thinking that membership of a Professional body confers integrity on anyone.

For instance, the former CIS (stockbrokers) President - Albert Okumagba(+) was indicted for investor fraud.

Even ICAN itself had a rogue staff that was involved in ICAN election fraud in 2014.
Integrity exists at an individual level NOT groups.

ICAN is the dream of every Accounting student if is is overreacted another issues.

If people are passing the exam now that means they prepared very well for it.

You can't say weac is overated now because there more success of student passing it.


That is the one thing I m long to get now even though I m already working

I am an accounting graduate, no ICAN but decided to embrace technology.

Today, I run an accounting software company that pays me more than Finance managers. I have trained a lot of accountant, managers and are still doing so.

If you no get money for ICAN, go learn software, it's the next best pair with Accounting.

It is only in Nigeria that someone will spend over 4 years to do a degree and yet still not be called a professional in his or her field of discipline.

It doesn't make sense.

Why don't we incorporate all this professional exams and certifications to the bsc we are doing and Let's know after 6 years we are coming out a BSC. MSC. ICAN/ACCA, ACA certificate holders?. Thereby making us professional experts in accounting in 6 years. But Yet!, we keep wasting our time in schools hoping for a better future. It doesn't make sense at all.

Are you an accountant? If you are not then you can never understand. By the way only a percentage of accounting graduates will eventually pass ICAN. Passing the exam has always been and will remain a great accomplishment.
