A country that fought civil war just barely 7 years after independence from its colonial masters was sure not a united one. To think that some of those remote and immediate causes of the Nigerian civil war are still evident in our society even on a larger scale 52 years after the war should tell u something ; Nothing has changed . Ethnic cleansing still happen in places like Benue state where the Fulanis attack an entire village with the hope of annihilating them , people of different tribes still look at each other with suspicions , religious intolerance still rife etc .

I served in the north west . In the main town down there , the indigenes who are predominantly Muslims refused to allow Winners chapel complete their church which was situated by the road side at the entrance of the town. They claimed it’s a slap on their face that a church will be what first time visitors will see when they enter the town. So they reallocated another land to the church where they built the present day church . Unfortunately the new site was then converted to “Angwa church “( meaning church area ) where subsequent Christian denominations were allowed to site their own churches too. The disadvantage here is that if a riot breaks out and the irate and uneducated mob wants to wipe all Christians, all they just need to do is mobilize to angwa church and wipe them all out on a Sunday during service .
