Zelensky condemns SA’s neutral stance on the Russian invasion
https://www.businesslive.co.za/bd/national/2022-08-04-zelensky-condemns-sas-neutral-stance-on-the-russian-invasion/

This guy! If a phone call from Biden, a visit by the German chancellor and a G7 meeting attended by Ramaphosa couldn't change our position, does he think his bleating to the media will have any effect?
In the next few days, US Secretary of State Blinken flies in and will also similarly fail.

It is not about Ukraine. The US have left that phase. BTW, convincing a country to support Ukraine can never been the main reason for a state visit. A call is enough for that. When a state visit is announced, the main reason is usually for country hosting or country being visited. Part of the G7 meeting was centered on Africa and a $600bn investment plan was announced.

The aim of his meeting is economic. To begin implementing economic partnerships. The US and her western partners want to battle China on who first develops and captures the African market.

As for Ukraine, everything has shifted back to military support which is clearly yielding fruit. All the diplomatic hullabaloo and sanctioning did not work and has practically been abandoned.

Damnnn!

I knew it!

CNN)US Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Michael Langley was promoted to the rank of general in a ceremony Saturday, becoming the first Black four-star general in the military branch's 246-year history.

Langley will take command of the US Africa Command, which oversees the nation's military presence in Africa, in a change of command ceremony at its Germany headquarters on Monday.

Speaking after the ceremony at Marine Barracks in Washington, DC, Langley said he was "humbled and honored for the opportunity to take on the stewardship of command of AFRICOM" as a four-star general.

With respect, I think as a South African who lives here, I understand better the pressure that's been brought to bear re our neutral stance.
1) The German chancellor was on a working visit, not state visit, and both the opening statements by both Ramaphosa and Scholz were mostly about Ukraine. Same thing at the press conference afterwards.
https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-05-24-ramaphosa-and-german-chancellor-scholz-sharply-disagree-on-ukraine/

2) Perhaps peruse SA publications to see the enormous lobbying by western ambassadors on SA's Ukraine stance ahead of the G7. SA has been invited to every G7 meeting since 2002- as has India - and it would be naive to expect that leaders there would not seek to persuade Ramaphosa on issues their own ambassadors are lobbying on.
And that the quite intense criticism by the West of South Africa’s “non-aligned” stance on the Ukraine war – far more than it has criticised any other African country – is a sign that South Africa matters to the West rather than portending any rift in relations.

Pretoria suspects that for the West it’s even useful to maintain good relations with South Africa – and India – to keep an eye on what is happening inside BRICS.

Conversely “the G7 and the West is important to us; it’s a major partner of ours. Though at the same time, BRICS is also important for us,” an official says. The result is that South Africa walks a middle path and will continue to do so.

Some South African officials look rather enviously at India which has more adventurously walked the tightrope between BRICS and the West. On the one hand it went as far as joining the Quad alliance with the US, Japan and Australia in 2021, to counter China’s influence in the Indo-Pacific.
https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-07-04-pretorias-stumbling-bloc-walking-a-tightrope-between-brics-and-the-g7/

3) Ukraine and South Africa's stance will be among issues discussed during Blinken's visit and as one of our think-tanks said,
Steven Gruzd, head of the African governance and diplomacy program at the South African Institute for International Affairs, said he doubted South Africa would be pushed into criticizing Russia, its partner, along with China, in the BRICS group of countries.

"I think Secretary Blinken is not going to find a receptive audience for his message that South Africa must come down on the side of the West, and the U.S. in particular, on the Ukraine-Russian conflict," Gruzd said.

To re-iterate the salient aspect of my original post: Zelensky holding forth in the media will not succeed, when others of real consequence have failed in changing SA's neutral stance.

Multiple new radio products from Namibia's Sat-Com!

In response to customers requests, Namibia’s Sat-Com has developed an intercom system for armoured vehicles and tanks, adding to its growing range of radios and amplifiers that now includes a small handheld VHF radio and a mesh networking radio.

According to Sat-Com’s Managing Director David Brown, the company’s customers requested a design for a new vehicle intercom system. Sat-Com complied and recently completed the design of the analogue intercom system, and aims to supply the first units in the coming weeks.

This was not something Sat-Com particularly wanted to do, but some of its customers had ordered intercoms from companies that could not deliver due to the Ukraine conflict, creating a “happy accident” product for the company, which will be supplying a new digital intercom next year.

Another new product Sat-Com is working on is its small handheld VHF Lynx radio, which is being built to military specifications. This came about from customers looking for ‘walkie-talkie’ two-way radios but which offer secure transmitting and receiving capabilities. Although there is a fair amount of competition in this segment, Brown believes Sat-Com could receive many orders for such a widely used and versatile product. Development may be concluded next year.

Sat-Com is also making progress on its Hornet1 handheld wireless mesh networking (MANET) radio. In a mesh network, every node in a network can communicate with every other node, efficiently routing data without the need for a central master node that could act as a point of failure. Wireless mesh networks enable connectivity to be spread across an extensive range: each node functions as an independent yet connected transmitter, creating a robust network that provides flexible communications.

Sat-Com hopes to have a couple of Hornet prototypes on display at the September 2022 Africa Aerospace and Defence (AAD) exhibition outside Pretoria. Brown is bullish about the future of mesh radios, which will have radio infrastructure provided on the fly either by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or aircraft or by temporary base stations.

Sat-Com’s main focus is on its military software defined multiband radios: the Leopard1 HF/VHF/UHF manpack, base station and vehicle radio; Cheetah3 VHF/UHF tactical manpack radio; Hornet1 UHF handheld mesh radio (in development); Badger, Shark and Hawk radio family; and Lynx1 VHF handheld radio (in development).

At present, Sat-Com is fulfilling lots of small orders from its customers as it waits on some large contracts. With the war in Ukraine, customers are looking at a wide range of products, from mesh radios to ground-to-air, naval and manpack radios. Brown told defenceWeb the Ukraine conflict is causing countries around the world, including Africa, to take a good look at their inventory and think about replacing it. “It was shocking to realise the Russians are having problems communicating. They do not have enough comsec/transec equipment or it’s too cumbersome to operate and radio amateurs were listening in. All of this has made countries realise they need to take stock of what they’ve got.”

In addition to Africa, Sat-Com is also talking to a couple of NATO countries on supplying radios, to NATO specifications. It is also pursuing the transfer of technology on a radio production facility for a foreign client as Sat-Com offers the ability to establish indigenous manufacturing capabilities and has built a semi-knock down (SKD) factory in West Africa.

Development continues on Sat-Com’s amplifier side. The Afracal1-VU VHF/UHF only radio frequency power amplifier (RF PA) is completed and in production – this resulted from a customer that wanted a simple, compact amplifier for vehicle applications. It took Sat-Com just eight months to develop the concept and put it into production – the first unit was shipped in April this year. Meanwhile, development of the HF RF PA Afracal1-H is ongoing.

The RF amplifier range covers the Afracal2 H-U 125W dual tri-band RF power amplifier; Afracal1 H 125W HF RF power amplifier; Afracal1 VU 100W VHF/UHF RF power amplifier; and Afracal 1K 1000W HF power amplifier.

Sat-Com has many new projects on its plate but is eyeing other promising areas, such as high power base station and naval amplifiers, a higher powered HF manpack, low power and light weight handheld military software defined radios, antenna tuners for mobile and naval applications, and technology transfer for international customers.

Mozambique military downs IS drones with Israeli anti-drone system
Manufactured by MCTECH RF Technologies, the MC-Horizon 360D V3 systems is a tactical system that can be carried on the backs of troops.

According to a report by the Mozambican army, the army has intercepted and neutralize 3 ISIS drone squads in the north of the country using the tactical systems provided by the Israeli company MCTECH RF Technologies. The drones were apparently sent for the purposes of gathering intelligence and bombarding the soldiers.

According MCTECH, the system model MC-Horizon D360BP V3 tactical systems were supplied to the Mozambican army at the end of 2021. The system are reactive systems carried by a soldier, and automatically detect the drone’s presence at a range exceeding 2.5 kilometers and neutralize them before they become a real threat. The systems were designed to protect squad or maneuvering forces in the field and allow it freedom of action without the risk of being attack or exposure by enemy drones.

Ido Bar-Oz, the company's vice president, said: "We are witnessing the widespread use of drones by terrorists’ organization around the world and especially in Africa terror cells.

We are pleased to hear that the systems in the service of the Mozambican army have been successful in defending against ISIS attacks. This is certainly impressive evidence of the importance of integrating those system in battle filed protecting the maneuvering forces".

Air Task Force(ATF), Operation Hadin Kai have neutralised another notorious commander of Boko Haram Alhaji Modu also known as "Bem Bem", and 27 other fighters in Borno State.

This was coming as The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Oladayo Amao, charged Nigerian Air Force (NAF) operational Commanders to ‘show no mercy’ and ensure they employ maximum firepower against terrorists posing security threats in the country.

Bem Bem and his fighters were killed on the Aug 3, by the military airstrikes in Mandara Mountain in Gwoza Local Government of Borno state.

An Intelligence Officer, told Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert and Security Analyst in the Lake Chad region, that a battle damaged assessment has indicated that the air interdiction had recorded devastating impact as many jihadists were killed, while others were severely wounded.
Sources reportedly said the the operation followed credible intelligence reports indicating that the ISWAP fighters were converging in large numbers with the intention to conduct attacks.
Bem Bem, was a popular drug baron who rose from an armed robber to Boko Haram Kingping.
He took part in the displacement of Bama town in 2014, and the killing of hundreds of people before declaring it as its caliphate.
