Better than real popcorn for those that want to seal their stomach for the day against hunger.
Yeah. Popcorns are lighter, while guguru are crunchier.

I don't agree.

Do you know that guguru is made slightly different from the way popcorn is made?
With guguru, the corns are more expected to toast than pop, and they're not as sticky as popcorn, but dry.
Woah! I've learned something new today... I've always thought that "guguru is simply popcorn" in Yoruba language. I never knew there's a difference in the way some varieties of popcorn are made according to your submission here.

I have a sweet tooth though, and I occassionally love the sweetened popcorn whenever it's available.

Great insights from you. Have a popcorny, great day ahead. wink

Yes, there's a difference.

Like I typed earlier, with guguru, the corns do not totally pop, and they're more dryer, and are hardly sticky like popcorn.

I don't think they use as much oil required in making popcorn in guguru.

Have you had guguru sold by the northerners?
Hausa or Kanuri guguru? I've never tasted Northern guguru.

@mariahAngel,

OK... If you say so. wink

By the way... You've sparked my curiosity here, the guguru should be from what part of the North?
You know the North is not monolithic in culture and cuisine/foods.

It seems you are based over there in the North of Nigeria?

No, I'm not based in the north.

I remember guguru and groundnuts were commonly sold by northern women down south.

More sweetener in popcorn can make even an adult loose control and clear one bag at a sitting. Please, add disclaimer.

Guguru are like popcorn, but they don't fully pop, making them a bit harder to chew (more like toasted corn).
They're best eaten with groundnuts.
Guguru is popcorn in Yoruba. Anything else is associated with the name is just added personal opinion.

Well, this is simply according to your experience. Guguru is popcorn. The fact that it isn't well made doesn't change its name. And I can say this because is grew up producing it commercially as a family business.

A brief personal history:

The type of corn that pops wasn't sourced locally. It was mostly imported. In the 80s, importation was normal as people could choose to buy local or imported stuff . The change in quality (i.e. some corn not popping) came when government tried to ban the importation in the 80s (Buhari era). The local alternatives were not as good in popping as the imported ones. But we never called the local one a different name. Both types were guguru.

We later packed up production when we realized the local variant wasn't yielding enough profits as the imported ones.

It's sad remembering how this country kills businesses. The machine we used in making the popcorn was imported. Automatic. When it gets to the right popping temperature, it automatically moved the pot away from the heater and pours the popped corn out, pass it to the batching and sealing machine, and loads another fresh batch for heating. It did all these with little human help.

Unfortunately, the machine couldn't operate with our local corn that doesn't pop at particular temperatures. Machine was left to rot and spoil. By the time the ban was removed by another government, the machine had gone to waste. End of that business.

Nice one.

Is there an alternative to sugar besides honey? Does popcorn made with honey taste ok?

I ask cause I don't like honey at all.

But its the only country we have as our own.

It is well.

I have used only sugar, and the one of caramel where you heat the sugar, butter, milk and oil separately before adding to the already popped corn. I don't know how honey will come out. It might change the colour of the pop corn a bit.

You can try it and lets know how it came out. Add the honey the time you were supposed to add the sugar.

I don't know of any other sweetener alternative.

Okay. Let's just say out of popcorn, guguru was made. cheesy

The guguru I'm referring to are not made with machines, they're manually toasted, and the corn kernels are locally sourced.
Most of the corns are usually partly popped, then salt and sugar are added for taste.

Buhari though! embarassed

To give you a scale of our production at that time. I knew we got vegetable oil in those big drums used for icing drinks in parties today( plastic ones, not metal). Atleast half a drum is used up per day.

Even though we did most of the production inhouse we still needed dozens of people for evacuation everyday for the packed finished product. It was a self sustaining profitable business. Then Buhari/Nigeria happened.

That's massive production in a day.

It's not late, you can still pick up the business. At least you know the ropes very well.

You can add salt with the oil and corn and mix properly before you put on the heat.

Add sugar when the corn is already popped. Turn in quickly and put out the heat if you are not using a heavy metal pot. You should see the sugar melt into the popcorn.
