Diamond League I guess I better explain what the Diamond League is about. A new league was created in the early 1990s and it was called the Golden 4. Basically, the organisers of 4 of the biggest athletics competitions in Europe got together and decided that anyone that won their event at all the 4 competitions would win a bar of gold. The events were in Oslo (Norway), Zurich (Switzerland), Brussels (Belgium) and Berlin (Germany). So, for example, if Carl Lewis won the 100 metres race at the competitions in Oslo, Zurich, Brussels and Berlin, then he could win a bar of gold. I used to follow the exploits of Nigerians like Olapade Adeniken, Mary Onyali and Davidson Ezenwa at the Golden 4 in the 1990s. More events were added in the late 1990s and it was then called the Golden League. Any athlete that won his or her event at all the 7 competitions could win a share of a bar of gold. The IAAF wanted the league to be more representative and global, so it was expanded and the name was changed to the Diamond League in 2010. It now had events in North America (the United States), Africa (Morocco), Asia (China) and the Middle East (Qatar). I often told people (in the 1990s) that athletes competed in the Olympic Games, the World Championships and the Commonwealth Games for personal and national pride and prestige, but athletes competed in the Golden League for money. The organisers of these events pay good money as appearance fee. The athletes get prize money for winning their events and they get a bonus for breaking the world record. They then get even more money for winning all their events at the Golden League. Basically, these are the big money races. |

Most people don’t know that the diamond league is where athletes actually make money. ufotunang: |

Who are the they? Most of the fastest sprinters have always been black. It’s not unexpected that a black athlete will be a great sprinter. The diamond league however like similar meets other than the world championships, Olympics, Africa games, common wealth games are grounds where individual atheletes make their money. These athletes make very little representing their countries. When they go out on their own however, they make more money in events like these. aylive02: |

It was a mixed feeling of tears and excitement for Tobi Amusan after she stormed to victory in the women’s 100m hurdles in Oregon, bagging Nigeria’s first gold medal in a World Athletics Championship. Amusan, 25, blazed over the line at Hayward Field in 12.06sec, not long after she smashed the world record in an overwhelming semi-final where she clocked 12.12sec. She delivered a jaw-dropping world record in the semis when she shattered the previous best mark of 12.20secs held by Keni Harrison of the United States since 2016. Jamaica’s Britany Anderson and Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico settled for the silver and bronze medals after finishing the race behind Amusan. |
