My HIV Test Dilemma by uncleck: 10:00pm On Aug 30, 2022
I noticed some ungodly invaders on my private sanctuary so I headed to a laboratory on Saturday to ascertain who the invaders were. The young lab technician took my urine, blood and swap for the test and asked me to come on Tuesday for result because the Monday sit at home is still active.

To cut the long story short, he told me I had "serious staphylococcus aureus". In his words, "but there is a problem-- you have HIV". Consequently he told me that someone who was going to bring drugs to me will call me shortly and he won't recommend any treatment for the staph unless I start treating the HIV otherwise the staph treatment won't work. Meanwhile as of that Tuesday, those invaders on my sanctuary had even disappeared to thin air; they were nowhere to be found again.

All the while I was just looking at him and shaking my head. My problem with him wasn't about the test result but the audacity with which he said I have HIV and even was determined to place me on treatment immediately. But I wasn't perturbed.

The next day I got a call from a lady who asked that we see at a certain health center. I told her I won't be available till Sunday. She was willing to meet me even in my location on that Sunday. I agreed anyway. I deliberately delayed seeing her till Sunday so that I would have time to do proper testing.

On Saturday I took my mate to another lab and we did the test again while she did culture as well (I didn't bother to do another culture since I was perfectly ok). The HIV test came out negative (as expected). I wasn't interested in meeting that lady again. Throughout Sunday I didn't call her and she didn't call me either. On Monday she called. I asked her whether she only gives drugs or she run test before treatment. She said she run test first, so I gave her another appointment on Tuesday.

I got to the health center this morning and discovered that the lady is truly a health worker. They wanted to start those their preaching I just told them to go straight to the point and run the test, whatever the outcome is I will accept it. They wanted to refuse but I assured them... The test was conducted and the result was still negative and few minutes later I was out.

Now the issue:
1. On the initial result, the lab technician wrote that HIV is reactive. A medical practitioner should know that at that instance, what he should do is to recommend a further testing. It was very wrong of him to conclude, based on that result alone, that I was positive. Let's even assume that I misunderstood him, he communicated it in the worst possible manner.

2. I look healthy. There was no emergency. So he shouldn't have held back from writing out drug prescription for the supposed infection for me because I paid 8k for the test. Not treating HIV shouldn't stop treating infection.

3. Staphylococcus aureus is not an STI, but you can hardly be intimate with a patient without being infected. There's nothing like staph in the test result of my mate. So I don't even trust that his result.

4. When I mentioned the name of the lab at the health center, the attested to the genuineness of the lab. But I'm concerned: could they have given me another person's result?

Possibly there was an error from the labs end but the lab technician did the right thing based on the supposed result by referring you to the health workers at the health center, they tested and saw it was negative.

I believe what you should question is the error from the lab, not the lab technician himself.

Many medical laboratories these days just formulate results without carrying out the necessary tests
