ION,Poland is rearming at the fastest pace globally and looks set to double their armed forces numbers in 5 yrs.

The 'Defence of the Fatherland Act', a bill first announced in October which parliament was debating on Thursday, had initially planned for an increase in spending to 2.5% from 2024.

Defence Minister Mariusz Blaszczak said the bill would raise the number of soldiers in the Polish army to 300,000 as part of a five-year plan. Poland currently has around 143,500 soldiers.

Given their location and economy the number of working platforms in their Order of Battle really isn't bad-fyi,their ahead of everyone in the EU in terms of MBTs

The ongoing situation just across their SW border is ofc cause for concern not just locally or even continentally but globally. These guys have historically attempted and failed to punch above their weight. In the late 30s they ignored Hitlers repeated requests for peace and discussions on the fate of ethnic Germans in the Danzig corridor and Poland and sparked off WW 2 by mass murders of ethnic Germans and border incidents. That and ancient grudges with Russians plus the resentment of the more recent history of the cruelty of the suffering inflicted by Judeo Bolsheviks during communism makes me doubt the Poles are preparing for peace .

The grievances extend across the ages, from Polish invasions of Russia in the 1600s to Russia’s repeated conquests of Polish lands later. The 20th century left particularly throbbing wounds. Russian prisoners of war, taken when Poles fought for their independence after World War I, died en masse in Polish camps in the 1920s. The Soviets conspired with the Nazis to divide up Poland before World War II.

And then Moscow made Poland a vassal state under Communism, even naming the alliance of Soviet satellites in Eastern Europe after the Polish capital. In recent years, it was Russia that felt alienated, as Poland embraced NATO and approved plans to host an American antimissile system that the Kremlin calls a threat.

In the background since 1940 was one of the most traumatic events for Poles, the massacre of more than 20,000 Polish officers and others by the Soviet secret police in World War II, compounded by a cover-up by Moscow, which for decades blamed the Nazis.

Am I the only one who wonders what f'ery Poland is cooking up?

atsina Govt Donates 9 APCs To Aid Fight Against Banditry

by Godwin Enna 12 hours ago

The Katsina State government has donated nine Amoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) to be deployed in the frontline Local Government Areas (LGAs) mostly affected by banditry in the State.

Governor Aminu Bello Masari, who inspected the vehicles alongside some top government officials and security chiefs on Tuesday in Katsina, said with the addition of nine APCs, the State now has over 30 APC vehicles to fight the bandits.

Affirming that government will win the fight, even though it was a tough and challenging time, he said the government and security operatives are equal to the task of dealing with the situation.

“We are now working with the Commissioner of Police and also a local producer in Kaduna to produce more APCs. We have gotten the quotations and the IG has given us an additional two, we have paid for their repairs in Kaduna.

“With these nine, we have over 30 APC vehicles in Katsina State. Though I don’t know what the military have but from the Police and our efforts, I’m sure we have over 30 APC vehicles in Katsina, and more are still needed to confront this issue of bandits who are becoming more sophisticated and daring.

“Also working to provide relief to those who are seriously affected by the activities of bandits across the State. We have national and state programmes to provide succour to the victims.

“I’m happy to say that of recent, the response time of security operatives has improved. Whenever there is SoS, the response is always better than before, and I think we will continue with the cooperation of the people,” Masari said.

He then lamented the activities of informants, which he described as the biggest problem, urging members of the public to always report suspicious movements around them to security operatives for quick response.

So Africa has become the girl that everybody doesn't want to hang out with but when China shows interest in her then the whole world wants to shoot their shot. They never remembered Africa in the 70s or 80s or 90s or even the the first decade of the 2000s, it is just now they know we exist, ARRANT NONSENSE.
That might be true for the west. But for Japan, I guess it depends on the country.. In Kenya Japan has been the biggest billateral lender since independence, and they have been consistent with no scandals. They were only overtaken by China back in 2013 and that was as a result of one single project (a railway project) But it as the years go by and as China is slowing down on its investments, Japan is set to take that position once more.

Perhaps we should start by catching up here on Earth, before thinking about Mars?

Africa skipped a number of steps in the technological evolution bcause it was relatively easier to adopt and the govts of the day saw the benefit of using latest technology in uplifting sectors of the economy that were stuck in the past, e.g some of us went from no traditional formal banking system in banking halls or ATM cards for more than 70% of the adult population straight into 21st century revolutionary and better mobile virtual wallets for more than 90% of the population! space research can be the same. In the course of researching how to make Mars habitable we might actually discover ways of reforesting the sahara désert.
Plus, I did mention agriculture and defence as part of that.. Dedicated agricultural satelites could help us with smart farming, crop intervention... The horn of Africa right now is facing its worse drought in 40 years yet we still dont have data on long term changes and trends going to the future... We just sitting ducks waiting for someone else provide the data for us to use to predict future meteorological patterns.

Possibly a blessing in disguise imo.....this will allow the SA army to go for the iklwa upgrade on the ratel which is much cheaper..
Sorry mate, they seem determined to complete Hoefyster, which personally I support. But I also think the Iklwa upgrade should also proceed.
Seems the project is too advanced to simply abandon.

Life being breathed back into Hoefyster – with conditions

As Denel readies itself to become a properly functioning entity, the State-owned defence and technology conglomerate appears to have an ally in the form of the also State-owned defence and security acquisition agency Armscor for Project Hoefyster.

In part, the presentation has it “completion of phase one of Project Hoefyster is deemed by both Armscor and Denel to be feasible” with conditions. These include end-user agreement on “waiving non-compliance to identified specifications”; suppliers willing to supply required sub-systems and components; availability of sufficient working capital to continue the project and Denel insourcing necessary personnel.

Denel is working on “a request for contract variation” that, once approved by Armscor, will see more regular payments as progress is achieved, facilitating release of funds to provide for labour and supply chain requirements. Armscor will also be asked to waive penalties on outstanding penalty milestones.

Hoefyster is, as far as can be ascertained, presently paused with six parts of the development phase at various stages of completion. They are 72% of hull and turret items common to all variants; 84% of the lead – Section – variant; 83% of the Fire Support variant; 73% of the Command variant; 44% of the Mortar variant and 53% of the Missile variant.

Completed as per phase two (industrialisation and production) started over nine years ago are 33 locally developed main weapon CamGuns and ammunition; 60 mm long range mortar bombs; 15 Patria vehicle platforms; 64 training simulators and four pre-production models of the Section variant.

Mars and space exploration is just a big waste of money.

That kind of money would be best spent on education, healthcare and maybe nuclear power plants and digging bore holes(national water reserves).

Africa is due for a mega drought. Countries like Uganda that depend on hydro power would have their economies destroyed

Waste of money? The Healthcare in most developed countries are actually really advanced even though affordability varies across the first world nations.

Last time I checked, most of the African nations are the people battling with drought, Healthcare, poverty and poor education. Also, Africa is not in any way a major contributing continent to the Mars space exploration.

No one owes Africa their money. Africa should fix itself and let others grow instead of stressing them with babysitting requests.
