We should stop trying to justify stealing pls. |

Dialpad:While that may be a factor, I assure you that it isn't really the most pressing. Holes/bugs result in Loss of billions so all banks take the issue of security architecture very seriously and even in instances where such bugs are exploited, the banks are the losers, not the customers because if by whatever reason customers accounts are debited without customer exposing any of his/her detail, then the bank will definitely refund (The widow in the write up will definitely get her refund, might just take a while because refunds like this go through several processes and after the bank has finished its own investigation to ensure that the customer did not compromise their details). The truth is that the bulk of these unauthorised withdrawals cannot be possible without the customer divulging their secret details, for example, the man that was calling chinyere in the write up is getting nothing I can assure you. He compromised his details and the bank is not liable to refund him. There's always going to be fraudulent staff because banks keep on hiring and paying peanuts to contract staff who feel that the fact that they are not paid enough gives them the right to customers funds, but here's the catch...the staff cannot just debit your account even if they have your account details, this is why fraudsters keep calling customers to disclose their details before they can access the account. #apologies for the long epistle, the summary really is to always be security conscious and not divulge any secret detail to anyone, be it staff or otherwise. |

The next administration should immediately sack this guy next February because he has mostly been a giant, under-performing disappointment. "Godwin Emefiele is a Nigerian banker who has been serving as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria since 4 June 2014. Born on 4 August 1961 in Lagos State, Nigeria, Emefiele is originally from Ika South, Agbor region of Delta State." |

I hope CBN is not playing games with the citizens. Around August 16, there was an announcement that 4.2percent should be the minimum interest rate on savings account. First, the circular had been secretly removed from the CBN website. Secondly, most banks did not respect the circular. Yet customers are charged over 28percrnt on loans and advances. Thirdly, few banks that implemented the circular made 4.2,percent as the maximum rate on savings. It is worrisome as the banks are circumventing the progress of this country under the watch of the CBN |

Ayodeoba:if hundred events happens , we will say they are bad persons, but we are talking about tens of thousands here .. something is definitely wrong that must be fixed.. as u rightly said there is no justification for stealing, but now the number is ever increasing, is it logically right to keep beliving bad morals is the only culprit?. |

bonechamberlain:Division will not solve anything. Will division change people's mentality? Will division stop Nigerians from crime. An average Nigerian is a bad person. An average Nigerian Is criminal minded. Most people don't exhibit the criminality in them cos they don't have the opportunity yet. |

Rayjnr:Resolving issues doesn't just involve the customer's bank so its devious to blame the bank. Most of these frauds occur via pos/web transactions involving other financial institutions, in such cases, even the bank escalate, its difficult to get response from beneficiary bank. I remember several incidents that happened when I was in zenith bank. In the first case, a customer made a complaint of ATM transfer error of about 70k, he was debited twice but the beneficiary was only credited once. He had already made several complaints and had gotten tired. I was making small talk and asked him why he was no longer coming to the branch as frequently as he used to when he told me what happened. I took it up personally and even though he told me months after the transaction had happened, I was able to get it reversed. Turns out the transaction was pending with the beneficiary bank since then and they didn't credit the beneficiary. I had them return the money to my head office and the customer was credited some days later. In another instance, a customer was defrauded after divulging his details, and a mutual friend begged me to help. I sent several mails but was not able to get favourable response. Apparently the fraudster passed the funds through several opay accounts. Opay responded for a while and stopped giving feedback. After several reminders to opay with no feedback, I gave up. You have to understand that staff have several things to do on their desk and when they do not get response from the beneficiary bank after they have tried severally, they simply move on to the next pending because there's little they can do to escalate other banks in their small cubicle in branches. |

yemmit90:You are talking about online bank. First of all, how many customers do those online banks have. Secondly so you know also that so failed transaction using some of these POS of online banks takes time to come back too. Thirdly I hope you know too that some of these online banks have their system attached to the traditional banking services. The traditional banks provide the platform in which they operate. I still work in the banks presently, we interface with all these online banks and a very big yes, transaction hangs in theirs too and it takes time to resolve. |

A person who reveals his or her ATM PIN over the phone to anyone claiming to be a bank staff is not an innocent victim but an irredeemable fool. |

nlfpmod:while the banks have several bad eggs amongst them. Most fraudulent activities are perpetuated by family members and friends of victims, as well as carelessness on the part of the victim in releasing sensitive information about their account. There seems to be a BVN dump which has leaked to these fraudsters which is why they have information that ordinarily they shouldn't have, so it makes it easier for people to trust them and reveal information. Banks should increase the salaries of their workers, to at least lessen the temptation to steal. This is the reasoning behind banker's getting good pay in the past, but the economy has changed and I am not sure that is reflected in what is paid to bank workers. There should be increased sensitization on ways Fraudsters can come at their victims and emphasis should be made on close acquaintances. CBN needs to step up |

I concur. There are so many inside job going on in our banks recently. Last month,I received a debit alert of 542k naira around 8pm and I informed my account officer immediately with my heart pumping. She advised for the account to be blocked sitting cyber crime.I told her that the transfer detail is from their bank,it took her 4 days to call back and be talking trash.I’ve written to their head office and all to no avail.I want to sue them.Banking is not safe in nigeria. You need to audit your account independently every once in a while to unveil some hidden charges that you are not aware of or discover worse. |

Lumig:Going by what you and the guy you quoted said, most humans have criminal elements. The only difference between a Nigerian and another person from Europe or the US is that over there the law applies. Once you are caught you are heavily punished. In Nigeria anything goes and this fact is cemented in the consciousness of people. Nigerians are hot inherently worse than any other people or race. Lawlessness or failure of the law to apply is the bane of Nigeria. |

Rich4god:That guy is correct. You can run many aspects of banking solely with technology. Whether or not you interface with online banks isn't the question. One can also argue that traditional banks interface with technology. Banks are thieving companies. The staff are just a tip of the iceberg. The corporation itself is a big, thieving, malicious company. |

Revolva:I just cannot stop laughing. You are simply joking. It has nothing with loosing your details. Did you fail to read the fact that insiders can move your money? I have a friend in the UK who left just 250k in her Nigerian account and it was removed completely without trace. |
| Re: How Bank Staff-Assisted Frauds Affect Bank Customers’ Deposits by GreyLaw(m): 11:39am On Sep 04, 2022 |
tunjijones:I wish I could engage you in discussion one on one. Let me tell you, the average Nigerian is not worse than the average European, In those countries the law applies and offenders are punished. In Nigeriz the law doesn't apply and this gets ingrained in the consciousness of people so they keep commiting evil. Nigerians are not inherently bad. Yes, division can help. If the country divides today people will ensure that the old system is replaced and laws would begin to apply. No human being is good anywhere; the fear of the law, jail, and death sentence is ewhat makes people fall in line. Ever asked yourself why people don't act stupid in China? Because the law applies in full force. If the law begins to apply today in Nigeria people will sit up. |

I knew the bank will no longer be the safest place to keep your money since I noticed the ugly trend among bank staff these days, they are now stylishly begging customers for money when they come to bank to do every little thing. If they notice that you don't give them as frequent, then they will suddenly become unfriendly against you, some of them will also show this attitude when they see that your account balance is low. It started from the security guys, now all the bank staff are turning to beggars. |
