Hi Fellow Nairalanders!

I am typing this piece with Disappointment, I least expected this.

So, I finished My Youth Service with Joy and gladness, and was back home till I get a good paying job, since I studied Metalogy/Civil Enginnering in the University..

As a Sure guy with Parly (Certificate) cheesy
I was very much confident of getting a nice paying job, So I started my Journey as a Job Seeker..

1st year, 2nd year, went by, and still nothing, So i decided to digress into something else for the meantime, everyone knows how Nigeria is .

I decided to pop into Teaching, atleast 'head still fresh'
I got this job, in a Primary school, the Headmistress and I agreed on a 30,000 monthly salary... I was happy though .

I resumed work, truth be told it was fun, but Sour at last..
I never knew this Madam was in for a trick..

Things were going well oo!
Firstly, Late to work a day - 5,000 deducted
Not being audible enough in the classroom - 3,000 deduction
Pupils not able to grab the day's work - 2,000 deducted
Failure to mark pupils note/ asessment/ assignment - 5,000 deduction
Few pupils failing Test, Oral questions and Examination - 5,000 deduction....

I was called for my salary, then Mrs. Headmistress brought out my file of report and defects , i was shocked when she tabled a sum of 15,000 naira as my salary for the month and Said "Welcome" I couldn't Fanthom where I was but i gathered myself and said "Thank you ma"

According to my fellow staff, this was the hidden principle in The School, people's salaries were deducted to nothing ...

I went home and slept throughout the week ..

Now Do you think I continue in this Mess or Venture into frying of akara and become self employed..

what are your thoughts, help a brother!!

Comrade are you still thinking about it , when you are suppose to be on the street with your well ironed apron , ooziing out to sweet smell of a graduate Akara and akamu, forgetting what your village people will say, and bearing in mind that people only celebrate success.
If you are based in Lagos around IK I can even come join u.

@IzzyAgu, please take the advise above o. When I was still in the university just few short years back, I used to know a young, handsome guy who started frying puff puff to sell. Before we graduated, the guy has expanded tremendously even employing someone self.

Go for the akara business. But do some research before you venture into it. Spend at least a week going around the highest selling akara joints and see what makes them attract customers.

So many people are into food business, but only a small percentage make it big. In my area, there are 3 people who sell akara, including a lady who branded herself. But guess what, only one of them has customers thronging there daily in good numbers. And no, it's not the branded lady.

Do the research I told you about, observing what makes them sell. At home, experiment with recipes that will attract people until you get the right one. Observe the time these sellers make majority of their sales. The high selling lady in my area sells in the morning and late in the evening. Leave the afternoons for rest and planning. Many food sellers think people will come because it's food. Fat lie!

One thing about this venture is it's not expensive to start, and you make daily turnover. But be careful with your money when you start. Write down your plans. If you have to provide complementary products like bread and akamu, do it when you have the funds. Then do the branding thingy when funds are available.

Also, listen to your customers preference. Get a good location and market yourself in the area. Your school employer is a thief, so it's not worth staying with her. Go for it and believe in yourself. Good luck!

The best house in my village is owned by a guy man, who use to fry Akara in those days in a park near Ikeja flyover. One day a customer eat his Akara, liked it and ask him if he can come to South Africa and do the same business, he agreed, that was how he managed to travel to South Africa and start the business and today he is a mega millionaire. Don't be fooled by the illusion of "I am a graduate" follow your ideas and not your dream, if you ever wants to survive in 9ja.

If you studied civil engineering, as you claim, go to construction sites (big sites) and see what you can do instead. You can work as an apprentice for a civil engineer for little or no money too. You will gain practical skills and experience this way.

You can also look for upcoming builders, contractors and surveyors to collaborate with. I'm sure those skills will come in handy when you finally get a job.

When money starts coming, please before you decide to have a girlfriend, get certified with the Nigerian Society of Engineers

Go into Akara business but with a touch of class to make a difference. Don't just set up your table outside but strive to fashion it like a pub or breakfast restaurant with options like pap, garri and other accompaniment your customers would love to take with the akara. All the best.

Guy man without money in the pocket is no man.

Except you want to be sarcastic by indirectly yabbing guys that have gone into Akara business, I see no reason you can't venture into it. The secret is finding the right location like a densely populated area, market, bus stop etc.

And you can't sell Akara alone, bread, pap, fried yam, and sweet potato plus fried pepper with ponmo and fish will be boosters.

Enter the business. You can still be a guy man and make your money. Forget that teaching job. Teaching is not necessarily bad, but it depends on your employer. May God bless your hustle.
