Lol! I have built a nairaland clone too with dark mode but I feel lazy to set it up at the moment, maybe next month. My major issue was having a dark mode

Do you have money to market your platform? And deep pockets to withstand at least 5 years of losses

U go make am.

Make I add mine, what people want is progress. We need an avenue that will make us progress move forward. NL lacks that.

Take Tick tok for eg. Wats TT doing days diff from FB and co.

TT makes users get plenty views and likes with small efforts, while others frustrate users like NL. Many ppl don blow for TT.. People I know not stories.

Just build wetin go elp ur users move from zero to hero and u are good to go.

That's d bed rock.

I built the prototype in PHP using laravel, If I had time, I would've re-written it in golang.

Exactly ! What made Tiktok blow was their recommendation algorithm, it made it easier for people to find contents of creators they had interest in unlike instagram and facebook that was trying to force you to see posts by your family and old school classmates who probably didn't even care

I built something similar and running it since 2020, building the site is not the issue, its marketing it and have people use it... I've had a bit of luck since 2020 that I started but ofcourse I'm running at a loss since, server fee and the likes. My site is 9jalinks dot com

I feel if you want to build something similar, you'd need a bit of luck, building is the easy part... but can you push for long (5-7 years), do you have a deep pocket, are you ready to collaborate with others?

TikTok didn't just beat FB, IG, SNAP by luck... it spent a lot of money, also acquiring Musical.ly by the way.

Checkout my site and let me know what you think.

A better idea is a Nigerian tech blog, where the experienced ones can guide how the market receives Nigerians, if we play it right the admin/mods could end up with recruiter roles and be paid $10k per competent programmer they refer to big companies.

I visited your site.

It needs a UI revamp. It looks like something from the days of geocities. Your site must be better than NL to even start competing in the first instance.

Secondly, it is plagued with the Nigerian webmasters addiction to intrusive adverts. As long as you dont have enough views/engagements to give you at least $1,000 every month, splurging with ads should be avoided. If you want to sha do adverts to at least meet hosting costs, then make them non intrusive. Look at Nairaland.

Tip: Take a look at Quora.

No vex say i dey blunt small.

Very funny.

And if u choose to advice the guy he'll abuse you.

That site is ugliest forum project currently on Nairaland.

I don't think anyone reasonable enough will spend more than a second there.

You have a better chance of making change if u convert the forum to pornsite

At-all, I no vex o... thanks for the feedback, ofcourse there are things that I could still do to make the UI better, but from a user point of view and to start, I tried to make the UI as simple as possible, people don't have the attention span to concentrate that long (if its not video or pictures), since the site is News based, I try to go to the point as fast as possible. Look at Nairaland, Craiglist, HackerNews, LIB changed her interface too but not much... even Google frontpage... If I'm a News site, people just want to read the news and leave. (9jalinks dot com)

Secondly, I'm not addicted to ads... if I had my way sef... ads no go dey, its just to fund the server cost presently which is not even being met by the way... but small small coins dey enter sha, I created space to host personal ads but nothing yet because I don't have the traffic of NL or LIB... Insha Allah as soon as I get there, I'll do away with ads asap.

I'll google ways to make the Ads non-intrusive but that means again that my coins will reduce.

Lol. Quora get deep pocket o from Silicon Valley, Me I'm just a guy from Ibadan trying to compete with NL, LIB, Twitter, IG, TT, FB and some other Nigerian popular Blogsites.

But thanks for your feedback, if there are other ways I can get better, please let me know.

Again, its a Marathon and not a sprint... Insha Allah we'll get there one day.

You have a very valid point here, maybe I'll look into it and if I get an idea, I'll share it with you.

An app idea that can make people blow... Omo, that will be a very big app and you need deep pockets for that... just thinking about building/marketing/PR... Phew!

I see a lot of Nigerian upcoming artists always posting their Freestyles on IG/Twitter/TT, I feel that if I can make a better place for them to post their works and be found easily... maybe it might work.

The idea never form fully but you get the gist.

Thanks for the feedback as well.

i love your maturity and response.

Server costs can be lower if you consider serverless/jamstack.

One of the main issues i noticed is the color blends. The blue is too light and does not contrast well with the white. You can take it some tones up. You can do some color matching using the materials palette to get a great blend.

You have good content on the site and i believe what you need to do is not as much as what you have already done.

I would be following.

Cheers bro
