U must have had conversations with many many people who made reference to relatives in local places…. ‘Like one of my uncle in the village ehn’….. but u won’t reason it
Once u hear someone mentions a relative overseas, U unsecured mind, ur inferior conscience would remind u that u don’t have person in abroad and would tag it pride

Oga, you need to work on yourself… you’re the problem

One reason rich people avoid poor old friends, there are certain utterances you make in discussions with them base on your wide experience, they’d see it as pride and might directly or indirectly kill you for it, but the rich ones would see it as a mere discussion and see it as topic for deliberations.

Again, Oga build yourself…don’t be Myopic
Very well said

A lot of the time, it has to do with pride of the person's achievements et al. For me, I have some brothers and friends that I get extremely glad to associate with because living that life abroad is really a dream come true. This is especially for those of us not from very privileged backgrounds.

When they say 'My brother is in Aba', you wouldn't reason it.

But when they replace Aba with Canada, you start feeling somehow.

My brother, you are the problem, not them.

Change your mindset.
Thank you.

Go to the embassies and airports and see people queueing up to leave the country and you will get answers to your questions.

Go to churches and hear visa testimonies and it seems like God is rescuing the testifiers from Nigeria.

The country is badly mismanaged and messed up.

Plain and simple.

I noticed that most Nigerians feel so much achievement upon having a family member outside the country. I have seen Nigerians proudly declare the following (just an example tough) :

1. My uncle in Canada

2. My Aunty in UK

3. My Brother in the US

4. My son in Germany

5. My cousin in South Africa

6. My husband is in the United Arab Emirates

7. My daughter in Italy

8. My brother in Malaysia

9. My nephew in India

10. My brother sister uncle daughter son in Kuwait
Etc.
I observe a pride in each of these people, and I realized that it doesn't even matter which country the family resides in, for the homers, they always feel like they won a noble prize by having a family abroad.
Some of these people have families in Indonesia, Malaysia, Israel, Libya, Kuwait, Honduras, Greece etc. And they puff with pride as if it's a life worth achievement.
Others have families in the US, UK, Germany, Canada, France, South Africa, Australia etc, which is still note worthy.

But the Question is; why do most Nigerians count having a family abroad as a big achievement, and even make mockery of their fellow Nigerians who do not have a family member abroad. Or those who refuse to mention that they have families abroad?

Is it a Nigerian thing to behave like that, or is it a global thing, do other countries nationals behave like that?

Your opinion is the back bone of this thread. Thank you.
Oga if e easy travel out your own.

somehow:
It's a mindset borne out of years of generational lack, financial and mental poverty.

Anywhere abroad is seen as an achievement.

It's simply a mental thing + the conviction that they are inferior and that anything outside Africa is superior to them.
Did u say outside Africa? ... people still wanna oppress dia neighbor cos their person stays in Ghana, Ivory coast, etc... Even wen in some of diz countries dat 9ja is better than.

It's just a psychological thing.

U know, we see it as taking an avoidable risk. We always think it's unsafe. And dat apart from cheap cost of living, dat there's lesser opportunities there.

Really? Why did you say it's a southern Nigerian thing, don't you think the Northern Nigerians might be the same? Do you have any idea of how they react upon having families abroad? Please your opinion is welcome. Thank you.
We Northerners are not much fascinated by the idea of travelling outside the country. In fact, the simple truth is that we are people that are contented with whatever we have. Despite our challenges in terms of poverty and insecurities, we don't see fleeing the country as a solution, but to rather stay, endure and work it out. Waking to see your family everyday is a blessing worth more than millions you will made working abroad.
However, the only place we dream visiting is Saudi Arabia to perform the Pilgrimage at Makkah. It is an ambition everyone here hope to attain in his or her life.

Its because you can't survive abroad. In here there's respect for everyone and there's no judging and killing people because they abuse prophet Muhammad. An average Northerner cant survive that

Emma please if you are not earning at least 1million naira consistently every month in Nigeria and you see any opportunity to travel to any of these countries legally; US, Germany, South Korea, Japan, Denmark, Norway, Belgium, UK, Ireland, etc, please take that opportunity and leave Nigeria to save some more capital and then you can leave your wife and kids over there and come back to Nigeria to restart your business with much more capital and exposure.
Your mom want the best for you, don't ignore her or hate her for that please

Smiles......Bro, i am doing fine and earning way above 1m per month and even in the so called dollars sef.

I have my plans and dreams which i am pursuing and the last thing i want is a distraction.

You are RIGHT!
Such Pressures have led to wrong choices and decisions in Life, that most Children have to continue to suffer even when their parents have left this world. Take it easy Man!

Don't mind those women!
They are naturally insatiable!
For example, you hear Ladies always complaining of not having cloths and shoes to wear to a particular function but when u visit their closet or wardrobe u find cloths & shoes littered everywhere. They can push an unstable man into QUAGMIRE. Take your time and plan!

And if you must leave Nigeria, make sure you choose a far better country than Nigeria. Make sure it's a Christian Nation or a nation with no too much desire for Xtreme Religious activities!

At the bolded is so so so true.
My wife do complain alot about not having enough clothes to wear to church but if you look her wardrobe, it is filled with clothes she hasn't even wore for years. Have told her i will pack them one day and go give to the needy since she is claiming not having clothes.

You won't blame them.
Let's be frank, many people are suffering while others are earning next to nothing t survive. Anybody earning 250k below has a family will literarily work all their lives with virtually nothing to show for it. So japa i a better option for them.

People are really really suffering. Sometimes, the level of suffering and poverty they fear me sef because it seems contagious.

It’s true sha, but you’ll also have to work for every peny you make abroad coupled with bills here and there leaving you with nothing much at the end of the day. My dad had to order two of my brothers back to the country and fix them properly when their grinding wasn’t yielding much return in the US. My point is If you are doing very ok here, then there’s no need to japa
