Been following the discussion you guys have been having...and to be honest, while good points have been made, overall, I doubt anime and manga are , as a whole, getting more 'woke and westernized' per se.

There is still fanservice (I am following anime like Is it wrong to pick up girls in a dungeon, and even manga like Rent -a girlfriend, which have some fanservice, and then recently there was World's end harem, which was heavily fanservicey.), and Japanese culture is still permeating most manga and anime I watch and follow...old and new. There are a whole lotta titles out there, and most of them are not 'western

I also doubt that the manga and anime makers are pandering to 'woke western customers'...at the end, their primary market is still Japan, and Japan is a different country from the USA. And even some of the most woke fans out there are watching anime because it is different from what they get at home, and won't want it to change much at all. (being woke sometimes involves respecting other cultures a lot...in a way).

Ironically, most anime was influenced by Western art styles (the big eyes of many anime characters comes from Disney style animation) and some anime storylines take place either in the West, or are influenced by the Western world (anime like Black Lagoon, and recently Takt op Destiny, and Cop Craft)...so they may look western a bit.

So, I really don't think that anime is getting woke. Not when Emilia is telling Subaru in the last season of Re Zero that she may have gotten pregnant from being kissed on the cheek by him (Emilia is not a character that many a woke person would wuv.).

P.S Crunchyroll's attempt to release an inhouse anime called High Guardian spice should tell you all about how popular wokeism is in anime fandoms in the West...

P.S 2: Not into shonen anime much myself...but there is a lot more beyond shonen anime which are still very Japanese.

I'm hypersensitive to these warning signs. Shonen Jump already seems to be inching ever-so-slightly towards that direction. Ideas such as this can trickle down to the other manga publishers. It doesn't take much for everything to go hell. Just look at the American comic industry.

Hell, look at any piece of entertainment media pre-2016 and compare that to now. The comic, movie, and video games industries accuse their fanbases of being bigots when they react negatively to their content.

Let's not forget that the CEO of Kadokawa already made pro-censorship remarks before he was forced to apologize and take a pay cut. It kinda shows you the headspace of these big Japanese publishers.

VAMPIRE IN THE GARDEN.... 7.2/10.

The show is pretty enjoyable...went in with low expectations but I actually enjoyed it

Just 5 episodes long...about a world where vampires and humans are engaged in never ending wars...

The show follows a Vampire and a human who wanted to escape the life they were forced into and find that "paradise" where they can live in peace together...despite the odds of their species co-existing being negligible

thank you...
I also agree with you that anime isn't getting woke

Even till today we still have so much Loli and other weird fan service in anime...

If anything the japanese are pushing against it...
I remember a time recently about a Japanese official trying to westernize anime and make it more appropriate for western audiences but the Japanese artists and legislature kicked against it cos it would affect creative freedom and lose its identity

I recently watched this excerpt from a stream where the westerners involved in CYBERPUNK EDGERUNNERS tried to get STUDIO TRIGGER to remove the character of REBECCA from the show during production cos they considered her looking too young and a Loli character in Night City...

In STUDIO TRIGGER'S words in reply: THE LOLI MUST STAY

Things like these clearly shows the japanese are kicking against the woke culture

Japan has always kicked against this woke iish despite some pressure from the West...
They keep maintaining artistic freedom

I don't believe they'd be dumb enough to change...they know it's this same freedom that got them to where they are today...

For example, look at U.S, the Comics Code restricted the U.S comic industry so much while Manga had no such restrictions...

With access in this age, Manga spread to the world rapidly and most people quickly dumped comics for Manga cos Manga offered better stories without restrictions from a useless Law

You can see that despite these restrictions now being lax, comics are struggling in sales compared to Manga

I mean who wouldn't choose a manga where the author has complete freedom to express himself...over a comic where the author is restricted by Laws, politics and then forced by critics to pander to Woke shii and LGBTQ nonsense

Everytime I see any comic news trending, it's always rubbish like Superman's son is gay, Thor is Bisexual, Captain America has come out to be gender neutral etc grin
It's so funny and it's why I have no interest in returning to comics except maybe Invincible

Luckily Japan is not like that...e.g One Piece major plot development news is always trending, even without reading the manga, any major spoilers is everywhere from twitter to TikTok to reddit to WhatsApp...even leaks sef

Probably still the best new anime this season...

This show hasn't disappointed at all...

This latest Episode 11 is imo one of the best episodes in the show so far

It's amazing how the show constantly switches so fast from casual to crazy

I'll make the argument that woke and/or lgbtq stuff in a show doesn't inherently make it bad, but highly depends on the quality of the writing and art, and also the passion of the people behind it.

The whole Marvel and DC pandering of race swapping, and the awkward lgbt.. inclusion of recent times are just tasteless soulless corporate products imo, but a good show/comic with good writing can be woke and inclusive and you wouldn't even notice it.
An example is The Boys, which the show and writers are rather unapologetic about their lefty leaning political stance and criticism of capitalism, and Corporate wokeness (the commodification and use of progressive ideals as a marketing strategy), while being woke itself and has lgbt characters (Queen Maeve), and is still hella good.

This also reminds me of the history of spider miles morales, which initially had a backlash from spiderman fans as being racial woke garbage, until "Into the Spiderverse" movie came out. Which had a good writing, and great artistic team behind it and now people love it.

So you might be right, artistic and creative freedom is probably why people gravitate towards manga to read some cool and wild shiz, you can't find anywhere else, at least that's how it is for me.

Honestly the word has no meaning now.

It used to mean being conscious of racial inequality and discrimination, in American society, but can now mean whatever due to its misuse by everyone.

yes
I feel like people accuse a show or comic of being woke when it seems to have nothing to offer except to tick boxes ...

Or when they create characters for no other reason than to tick those boxes or gender swap or race swap characters for same reason...

For me, I don't have a problem with being political or having gay characters as long as they actually serve a purpose to a good plot...
In fact if the plot is good, the sexuality of the characters or race will even be the last thing on your mind
