Chapter 44

"Cheers to a hopeful and bright future!" Gabi raised up his glass.
"Cheers!" Everyone echoed as they clinked glasses.
They were all in a decent restaurant. The White family, Gerard,Dahlia, Jeremy, June and finally Verona. They were seated around a table large enough to contain their number. Evening had drawn near and though there weren't much people within, the waiters and waitresses were still kept busy as they moved around taking orders from the few within.
"I must say I still find this difficult to believe." Gabi said.
"What?" Gerard had an arm around Dahlia and she rested her head on his shoulder.
"A potential strong hybrid within our midst." Gabi sent a look towards Dahlia's stomach. "You think he or she would be stronger than his parents combined?"
"Beats me." Gerard shrugged.
Gabi frowned and turned to face Verona.
"I cannot determine that." She said. "All that I know is that the offspring has a very high potential. The level of strength depends on the path chosen in future."
"Possibly more powerful than Jeremy?" Gerard asked.
Jeremy raised an eyebrow at him.
"Maybe." Verona shrugged. "Maybe not. But like I said it depends on the path chosen."
Just then a waitress arrived at their table. She looked to be in her early twenties and had brown eyes and black hair tied in a neat bun. She smiled politely at the group.
"I hope you're enjoying your drinks." She said.
"Oh,we are." Gabi replied.
"So I guess you will be ready for something to eat,right?" She asked and was replied with nods. "May I take your order?"
"Steak with a splice of barbecue sauce. Large one." Gabi said.
"I'll have the same." Felicia replied.
"Same here." Gerard, June, Jeremy and Mandy echoed.
"Okay." The waitress nodded with a smile, jotting something down on her notepad.
"And you, ma'am?" She faced Verona.
"The same." Verona smiled.
Everyone at the table turned to face her with wide eyes.
"Is there a problem?" Verona asked calmly.
"Okay." The waitress laughed.
She turned to face Dahlia with a smile. But the smile seemed off. Almost predatory. However,only Verona noticed it and she narrowed her eyes in suspicion.
"And what would the pregnant lady like?" The waitress asked Dahlia, the eerie smile still on her face.
Everyone looked at the waitress in utter surprise.
"How did you know she was.." Jeremy began.
"Oh, just instinct." The waitress waved her fingers with a giggle. "She does have some kind of glow about her."
The smile was back on the waitress face. Verona narrowed her eyes at that point. Dahlia looked unnerved a bit but managed a shaky smile.
"I..I guess so." She stuttered. "Just water will be fine for me."
"Okay." The waitress jotted away. "Alright. I'll be back soon."
She walked away. Verona suddenly felt something disturbing about the atmosphere. Something didn't feel right. Dahlia may have been showing but not to the kind of extent a random person could just note out of the blue...
"Verona!" Verona blinked and shook her head at the sound of her name. She turned her attention to the group who were giving her concerned looks.
"I'm sorry..What?" She said.
"I've been calling your name for a while now." Gabi said. "Are you okay?"
"Y...Yes." She smiled.
She saw a sceptical look cross Jeremy's face and she quickly averted her eyes. The remaining members of the group shrugged it off.
"Anyway, I was asking about your choice of meal." Gabi said. "Steak? I thought you were a vegetarian."
"What made you think that?" Verona asked.
"Well, you just look like one." Gabi said. "And your diet always consist of grains and...well..tea."
"Has she eaten meat at your place before?" Felicia asked June.
"Not at all." June shook her head.
"You all don't need to worry." Verona laughed. "I eat meat. Just once in a very long time. It's just that I try to consume more of vegetables and herbs due to their direct link to the soil and the energy within it. The spirits have bestowed the earth with spiritual energy so many things that grow from it and are consumed by witches is where they draw their power."
"So you witches are mostly vegetarians?" Dahlia asked.
"Yes." Verona nodded. "But for tonight, I'll just live a little. Patronise the werewolves a bit."
That brought general laughter to the table. Two waiters at that moment appeared at a table with a tray of their orders. They placed them on the table.
"I thought the waitress was the one in charge not the delivery." Jeremy said.
"Oh, she's a bit occupied at the moment, young master." One of the waiter, replied pointing towards the waitress who was about heading to what looked like a door that lead to the washroom. Before she closed the door, she turned around and her eyes met Dahlia's in discreet fashion. She smirked and made her exit. Dahlia became uncomfortable at that moment.
"Okay then." Jeremy shrugged and the waiters bowed courteously, making their exit.
"Well, what are you all waiting for?" Gabi said. "Dig in!"
Everyone settled into their meal but Dahlia's eyes lingered on the door. She couldn't get that waitress's face off her mind. And not for good reasons.
"Sorry,excuse me." She stood up. "I would like to use the restroom."
"Okay,Love." Gerard said. "Be careful."
She nodded at him with a smile and made her way out the door. As she entered the hallway that led to the bathroom. The hallway was illuminated by bulbs above which were in a straight line.
Her eyebrows were raised in inquisitive fashion as she saw a door to her left and heard the sound of water rushing. She walked towards it and opened it. The waitress stood in front of the sink, washing her hands. Her back was turned but the mirror in front of her was enough to show her face. She smiled as she continued washing her hands.
"Hello, Miss." She said, still not taking her eyes away from the sink.
"There's something strange about you." Dahlia stepped in and closed the door gently.
"Oh?" The waitress raised her brows and switched off the tap. "How so?"
Dahlia noticed her eyes were still on the sink before her.
"It is almost like you know more about me than just my pregnancy." Dahlia walked closer. "It's like you want me to be here."
The waitress suddenly chuckled, startling Dahlia. The lights above began to flicker. Dahlia gasped as a sudden wind blew into the bathroom lifting the woman's hair out of her bun. The waitress laughter became hysterical.
"Oh, I know more about you." She said, her voice changing to someone elses. Someone eerily familiar. "And I don't just want you here. I want you back home. WE want you back"
The waitress turned around and Dahlia gasped as she saw one of her eyes glow purple.
"Nuri!" Dahlia cried out, her eyes widening.
"You've been an incorrigible woman, Dahlia." The waitress laughed. "But don't worry, there is a permanent remedy for you."
Dahlia turned around and made to run but the door was surprisingly locked. She used her superhuman strength to pull it but it didn't budge.
"No!" She cried.
She heard the waitress chant and spun round. The waitress snapped her fingers and Dahlia felt the world slip away from her consciousness. She collapsed on the ground and a bright light enveloped her. The light disappeared moments later and she was gone from that spot. The waitress's left eye stopped glowing and she shut her eyes tight,opening them again seconds later. She looked around the bathroom in confusion.
"How the hell did I get here?" She asked.
