Like he said, in the countries where FDI had had an impact, it was never a plan A but rather came to play an ancillary role in economic development.

Japan, South Korea and China pursued rapid industrialization and reverse engineering before opening their doors to Western investment.

If a third world country plans her economy solely on foreign direct investment, the aftermath is that she will be compromising her territorial and economic integrity by being amenable to the whims and caprices of big foreign corporations in addition to manipulations from their home governments...

There is no country today making veritable strides in economic development without having a key comparative advantage in one form or the other in the global value chain.
