Dear Accountants, There is now a circular from the FIRS stating that MTN, Airtel and Money Deposit Banks are now unpaid agents of the service as per VAT retention and remittances. The implication of the foregoing for companies operating within these sectors is that they are now mandated by the service (FIRS) effective January 2023 to withhold VAT elements on all invoices issued on them and have same remitted to the FIRS. In very explicit terms, if you are working in any of these companies, retain both WHT and VAT and only pay the net amount to your vendors as it has always been the practice in oil and gas sector. Do not just withhold, ensure you remit. |

Ajibola Jinadu FCA,FCCA,FMVA® Don't despise your humble beginnings because you can't see their value yet. So, after I was rejected from KPMG , I was not confident that any of the Big 4 Accounting firms would hire me. I wanted to be an auditor or accountant, but I needed a job more than anything else at the time. I went to a small accounting firm in Oshodi, and the guy there said he would pay me 20,000 even though I had an ICAN certificate and was in the last stage of ACCA. But it wasn't his fault because he offered, and I accepted. I thought it would be better to learn to be an accountant than to "sell out" elsewhere. Let's say you know you've made a big mistake when, on your first day at a new job, you look for other jobs online. I worked there for about a month before I got a role at First Pension Custodian. I interviewed for an entry-level job in the Finance department, but I was told that all new hires must start as a Custody Assistant in the Contributions department. My main job was to record people's pension payments in an Excel spreadsheet. That was it. Excel was different in 2008 than it is now, and many people still need to learn how to use it. I still needed to learn how to use it when I started working. Deep down, I was distraught that I had spent a lot of time and money studying accounting and getting certified, only to end up doing "data entry" work. It was great to work there. The pay was good, and my co-workers were great, but the role didn't fit my career plans. Still, because I used Excel daily, I got good at it. About four months later, I had the chance to interview at Deloitte. There was a surprise practical Excel test during the session. I couldn't believe that all that time I spent being unhappy was time I used to learn something that was helping me get my dream job. At that point, it suddenly felt like I had spent the last four months being trained (and paid) to learn Excel. If I had that test 4 months earlier, I would have failed successfully. The rest is history. Two key lessons from my story: 1. Every situation, even the bad ones, can teach you something that will help you when your chance comes. You will get your chance. and 2. Sometimes, it may feel like you aren't moving forward or upward, but trust that there is always a plan for every path. Even if you don't think it's the right way. |

Dear bosses, We need you all to have a good sense of humour, if you don't want to have a good sense of human, have a small sense of humour A little humour can lighten up the entire office. You cannot be looking scary all the time. Crack jokes some times it does not make anyone loose respect for you. |

In accounting, two bases exist. They are called bases because they are the foundation for all accounting recordings. Cash basis and accrual basis. Cash basis is easy to understand and record. So, it is popular as anyone can “follow the money”. However, it does raise a significant issue. A transaction does not exist without the cash element. Thus, Cash Accounting has the potential to conceal many business activities. That is not what we want - We won't have debtors, creditors, and many requirements of GAAP/IFRS recorded even if we have them in our business. Accrual basis addresses this. It records past and future events (future obligations). It even includes Cash basis making it more comprehensive. Unfortunately, many accountants try to pass off cash basis as accrual basis. I agree that it can be confusing sometimes. But if you use accrual bases, here's a way to distinguish the bases: Always remember that the occurrence of an activity (accrual) and payment (cash) are different. Payment might precede the activity, happen together with the activity, or happen after the occurrence of the activity. Always strip down each transaction to the timing of the activity. The fact that they occur at the exact moment does not imply that they are the same thing. Once you know that, you will focus on recognising the activity in totality before realising its payment (irrespective of when this happens). |

Ajibola Jinadu FCA,FCCA,FMVA® More coming-of-age stories. I've talked about how I struggled initially after joining Deloitte. But once I found my groove, I became unstoppable. Saying that I was a high-flier wasn't a compliment; it was just a fact. Enough bragging. Back in the day, each associate was given a section and a certain amount of time to finish it. Usually between 8 and 24 hours, depending on how hard it was. I'd finish my sections in 3–5 hours with no mistakes and then start playing "Football Manager." I typically finished before the deadline and made no or few mistakes, but I got an average performance rating. In my evaluation, my manager wrote, "Ajibola is good, but he doesn't help the team succeed." It hurt, but I knew it was true. I was selfish. I was good, but I never helped anyone else on my team. I never bothered to teach anyone else what I knew. I wanted the glory of doing a great job for myself. Think about a good football player who doesn't pass the ball or acknowledge his teammates – they won’t get very far. The important thing was that I took the feedback and did something about it. Helping others succeed pushed me forward faster than any technical skill I learned. Remember If you only do your job and don't help other people, you're taking up space instead of making room for yourself and others. Help others to help yourself. |

Respect is Reciprocal. The importance of respect in the workplace is something that must be understood by employers/employees at every level of seniority. Respect at work is a vital part of establishing a healthy working environment. Almost every workplace will experience conflicts from time to time. Such disagreements can lead to decreased productivity, demotivation, and misunderstanding. Employees won’t always see eye-to-eye, and the workplace can harbour many obstacles for colleagues to disagree over. After all, we all have different perspectives, outlooks, and ways of working. Mutual respect in the workplace lets all employees know that they are valued for their achievements, abilities, and qualities. Being valued and treated respectfully helps to promote a positive work culture in which employees are fulfilled, loyal, engaged, and motivated to perform at their very best. Whether you’re cleaning up the office or helping a colleague with a project, having meetings at various levels, showing respect in the workplace provides a range of transformative benefits which can never be underestimated. Do not disrespect the people who work for you or with you. Respect space Respect time Respect individuals Respect Opinions. Respect skills |

JOB FAIR COMING SOON I was recently having a discussion with the Group HR of a multinational, and she told me about how a lot of people have resigned in the last 6 months from the organization. Then I told her about the number of job openings I got on Tuesday & Wednesday this week alone. It was so much that I had to decline many cos it is not easy looking for skilled candidates. While the great resignation is no longer news, what has happened is that there are lots of new job vacancies which needs to be filled urgently. However, companies especially HRs are unable to get the right/fit candidate for the roles. So I thought about it. Since I have the connection to many job seekers, and potential employers, why not lets have a JOB FAIR - where professionals can pitch about what they do and potential employers recruit directly based on the candidates' profile. On this note, I will role out a JOB FAIR one of these days probably towards middle of this month, and would also reach out to many employers to please come to the thread to review candidates profile and hire directly via the comment section. I know this is new, but I believe it will work. Who is willing to support this JOB FAIR? Lets create awareness. Anticipate something great this month. Your job is right in front of you. Get ready to secure it. |
