My funny encounter with a recruiter..

Immediately after my MBA, I was job searching and open to new opportunities. A recruiter contacted me via LinkedIn that he was recruiting for various positions.

We kept in touch and he was updating me about the progress of the application. At a point, he asked about my last role and I told him, he then told me to link him to my previous employer. That was a red flag for me and I decided not to deal with him.

The guy was too smooth for me and I decided to ghost him. My name is pronounced To-Bor-Reh. When he called, he used to call me Mr. To-Bo-Ree with an accent and he was just too smooth that it raised a serious red flag. To the extent,I saved his number in my phone as '419 Recruiter' and I was always at alert when dealing with him.

He was persistent and kept calling me. I later decided to play along but made up my mind to block him once he asked for money. I dealt with him, but I was very cautious and conscious, and my alert was high as I suspected either a scam, fraud or social engineering.

A couple of weeks later, he scheduled the interview with the organization and sent me the interview details, I went for the interview and got the job. It came as a shock because I had my reservations.

All along, I thought he was not genuine. It was later when we got talking I discovered he was just starting out and was looking to build his portfolio, hence, he asked for me to recommend him to my former employer so he could recruit for them.

Sometimes, we might have our doubts, keep going but put measures in place to protect yourself. In my case, I decided to cut off once anything financial was mentioned.

Signs of Recruitment Fraud:

1. Asking You for Money. Simply put, don't send money to a potential employer.

2. Upfront Requests for Sensitive Information.

3. Offering you the job without an interview.

4. Generic Company Email Addresses. Be wary of recruiters using free web email accounts from services like gmail or Yahoo! as opposed to using a business email address to contact you.

5 Recruiters being evasive when asked about the job in question.

6. If It Seems Too Good To Be True.

If you get contacted by a recruiter, your first port of call should always be LinkedIn. If their profile doesn’t have a lot of connections or has incomplete information, this could be a warning sign that it's a fake recruitment agency.

Regardless of whether a recruiter is legitimate or not, you should always ask questions when discussing a role. However, this is especially important if you suspect you're being targeted by a job recruiter scam. Set boundaries and stick to them, especially once it involves them asking for money or sensitive personal information.

- Arrive home for dinner & spend 2.5 hours w/ my wife

Work time: 8.5 hours
Commute time: 2 hours
Family time: 4.5 hours


As a solopreneur, this is my schedule:

- Wake up at 5:30a
- Drink coffee until 7:15a
- Social media for about 60 minutes
- Go for a 1.5 hour, 6-mile walk with my wife
- Write my newsletter & content for 60 minutes
- Eat lunch, sometimes at home and sometimes out
- Come home and spend about 1-2 hours more working
- Spend the evening with my wife cooking, eating & wine-ing

Work time: 3-4 hours
Commute time: N/A
Family time: 8-9 hours

The latter is how human beings were designed to live.

Life/work balance.

Not the other way around.
