The phrase, “Transport fare” is common among many English users. However, it is not correct. One of the commonest examples of bad expressions is: Give me Transport Fare.

As simple as the statement “Give me transport fare” is, it is bad English. Why? It is tautological. Tautology is the saying of the same thing twice over in different words, generally considered to be a fault of style.

The word, fare, is the money paid for a journey on public transport. The word, “Transport” appears in the definition of fare. So, it is incorrect to use the two words together.

It is right to say, give me the fare/a fare. Also, bus fare, air fare, taxi fare, etc., are all correct.
