The US did not "almost singlehandedly" win the war in the West and it did not "almost single handedly" arm Russia. Britain, perhaps, but not Russia. Actually, they retreated, not because they wanted to but because there was a change of tactics.

Japan was so badly beaten they could no longer fight back but refused to formerly surrender. The nuclear Bombs forced them to surrender.
What we have in Ukraine is a totally different thing.
Anyway, Russia can't go nuclear without the US knowing it.
There are measures to still ensure their defeat even if they use tactical nuclear weapons.

The truth about the nuclear strike on Japan was two fold.

One. As you said the fear of casualties, but not civilian casualties as in Dresden where German citizens died in mass (the US didn't care about Japanese civilians by then). But the fear of combat casualties in the event of a ground invasion estimated by General George Marshal to be a million including 250,000 soldiers killed based on projections from the bloody campaigns on the nearby islands of Iwo Jima and Okinawa, casualty figures which the American public could not accept.

So they needed a surgical strike with such great shock and awe that the Japanese will loose every will to continue fighting. So they targeted two things. The largest industrial port city complex and army headquarters within B52 range to decimate the Japanese war production and command and control, and then the largest populated city, Kokura (largest outside Tokyo, for they also wanted to avoid the imperial palace, harming the emperor and other cultural sites and sensibilities that will have galvanised the people to continue fighting) to break the will of the government.

Secondly, they also wanted to show the Soviet Union that they had the means to take on any adversary should the war have continued beyond 1945. For Stalin had cut short the neutrality pact he signed with the Japanese in 1941 (to have expired in 1946) and seeing how Japan and the US were bogged down in horrendous attrition attacked the northern flanks of the Japanese empire.

What outpost? I think Putin felt that the USSR breakup was a mistake and his goal was to build it back. Ukraine gained independence in 1991 and since then has been gravitating toward the West. He wanted to shut down that Western influence and try to build back a larger/more powerful/important Russia. He overestimated.
