If any party takes over Lagos as it is today with the rate of rural-urban migration and absence of well structured systems in the Country, Lagos will become a big mess and a burden to the country.

Let's use Cross River State as a case study.

As I child during Christmas, we would land at the Airport in Calabar to spend our Christmas vacation as spectators of the colourful bands that will dance past us during the Calabar carnival. The carnival was simply the biggest Christmas event in Sub-saharan Africa.

On our way to the hotel we'd stay, my mother and the tour guide would be discussing how clean Calabar was. I remember trees planted in the city and thousands of waste bins that were not filled up after every 1 meter. I was not yet 10 years old but I think those trips to the hotel used to feed my eyes with neatest gaze of an environment anywhere in the country. We'd visit Tinapa, Marina resort and Obudu Cattle Ranch when father gave us more funds to enjoy ourselves.

After Donald Duke exited office as Executive Governor, the next Governor continued with the carnival but the quality was decreasing, the towns were becoming disorganized and the facilities for tourism in the state were deteriorating.

Under the administration of the current Governor, Cross River State is a ghost town during Decembers. There's no carnival and the towns are as dirty as any Nigerian town. Weed and rodents have taken over what used to be the destination of tourists in Nigeria.

Donald Duke had a vision of creating the best tourism site in Africa. He did that in 8 years but the project was a long term project that should have taken 30 years to reach its prime. All he needed was q chain of successors to achieve the goal and people from that part of the country would be swimming in wealth like the natives of the Emirates.

Getting successors and a team to continue the long term plan of developing Lagos to the best city in Africa is what Tinubu got right.

You may ask why succession democracy doesn't have a place in North America and Western Europe but nations in those continents prosper. Those countries had systems built for more than 100 years before they could work. That is why whether an American President is Democrat or Republican, he knows that he has a responsibility of fighting at least one foreign war before he leaves office because America profits through foreign domination.

We are still in the process of building strong systems and institutions. Don't argue that anything will change soon because even Peter Obi which you portray as something new is bigger than Labour Party. That's a classical example of individuals being powerful than institutions and systems.

You should instead study the rise of the Emirates to understand how the succession of their monarchs helped them in achieving their goals or China to comprehend why there is the CCP.

Yet, both Amosun and Dapo are supposedly from same party. In America, once you fail to deliver, you're off and most likely, your party. That is where real development is understood.

Ambode was the new revelation of leadership. How he reduced the traffic in Lagos drastically, was magical. How he focused on people's oriented projects like the BRT parks, pedestrian Bridges and flyovers was mind-blowing. His ideas of new Lagos was a model yet to be seen, yet, he was removed for selfish interest

How will a state develope this way. Four years down the line, Lagos is struggling to see true development. The traffic is back in higher fashion and the governor has the ticket to run for the second term

We deserve better

That's the problem
Govt has no business organising carnivals
Top down doesn't work
If it was profitable private sector would continue

What he needed was free market capitalism

Getting successors and a team to continue the long term plan of developing Lagos to the best city in Africa is what Tinubu got right.
Tinubu got capitalists (refinery, airport mgt, link bridge, toll gate, shoprite, none is govt owned, why they're sustainable)

You may ask why succession democracy doesn't have a place in North America and Western Europe but nations in those continents prosper. Those countries had systems built for more than 100 years before they could work.

Are you marvelously stupid? Comparing Lagos to any state is like a one eyed man in the land of the blind. Lagos cannot in terms of infrastructure compete with Dakar, Johannesburg, Cape town and Cairo also Kigali and other key cities in Africa. Lagos in all standards is not developing, it is even among the least liveable cities in the world just better than war torn Damascus, which is so embarassing. If you have really travelled outside Nigeria, you will not even make this stupid statement.

What happened to Calabar/Cross Rivers and our country in general is what you get by failing to educate every child free with enough teachers employed. How can you do physical development without adequate human capital development? Na which kind sense be thathuh

Is it UAE/Dubai or China with its almost 1.5 billion people that do not provide free education for all their children?
Why has Tinubu failed in this regard for Lagos since 1999 despite increasing IGR a whopping 83 times from the people's pockets, in addition to high oil prices federal allocation plus huge loans, even though he calls himself progressive heir to Awolowo's legacy? The same free education failure in the remaining 35 states.
Noteworthy is that Atiku & Obasanjo established UBEC to provide federal support funds for the states to give free education for 9 years to all children.
Furthermore, Awolowo and LOBOO governors did free education in the 1950s and the 1980s.

Realdeals:
1. The first governor to present a billion Naira state budget in Nigeria.

2. He phased out the shift system in Lagos schools in three months. He built functional classrooms to absorb those who only attend schools for three hours a day.

3. He opened up what is now known as the Lekki Corridor.

4. He built the biggest Housing estate by a state government at Abesan, along with five other estates.

5. He built LASU, LACOED, LASPOTECH and Technical schools to absorb the products of the free education policy.

6 He built General Hospitals and Health centers in all the five divisions of Lagos. He also upgraded General Hospital Ikeja to the Medical arm of LASU.

7. He created the Agric hub at Oko Oba. He also created similar hubs in Ikorodu, Epe and Badagry.

8. His government’s strict adherence to the party manifesto of Free Education, Free Health care, Rural integration and Housing for all, along with other UPN governors, created the largest pool of human resources in Nigeria.

9. He moved the Lagos State Government Secretariat from PWD to Alausa, which he built from scratch. He also lived in his personal house and drove his personal car throughout his tenure.

Some days ago, I was at a secondary school in Surulere (across the bridge from the Island) in Lagos for a friend's event where he is educating secondary students about the perils of peer pressure. I honestly wasn't expecting what I saw as the state of this secondary school.
It left me wondering if this was a school or a dump yard. Why in heaven's name are Nigerian leaders looking the other way while the young ones study in this sorry environment?

The attached pictures are what I saw. This is no secondary school. It's a hopeless shanty. I hope this gets to front page and attracts the necessary attention.

fashola-battles-to-justify-lasu-fee-hike

Okay. Not exactly what he said. But that is exactly what he implied. How much is the minimum wage of Lagos state civil servants? He seems to be out of touch and his statements are highly irresponsible!

http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/12/fashola-battles-to-justify-lasu-fee-hike/

Governor Babatunde Fashola battled hard weekend, to justify the astronomical hike in tuition fees recently introduced in Lagos State University, LASU, by the state government. Recall that the state government had increased tuition fees paid in the university from N25,000 to N250,000 per session.

Fashola, who spoke at Government College, Ughelli’s, annual luncheon party in Lagos, said Nigerians were unconsciously making the country one where there would be separate schools for the rich and poor.

According to him, critics of the increment are indirectly calling for a Nigerian society which will be divided into poor university for the poor and rich university for rich people.

He said: “Countries that do not prioritise education are always at the mercy of those who place a high premium on education.

“Where in the world have we seen tuition fee of university of N25,000? You cannot find this anywhere. Even the nations that are developed and wealthy do not give education for N25,000.

“LASU started very well and over the years, the population grew and beyond the available facilities and the school began to deteriorate. We are determined to rescue LASU and we will not make it a school for the poor.

“We are unconsciously making Nigeria a society where there will be a school for the rich and one for the poor.
“Several people in this country pay so much for education abroad while the schools here continue to deteriorate. It is only in the university that the children of the rich and children of the poor can sit in the same classroom.”

Hope you also know that after Duke left as guvnor of Cross River state, the state's revenue went down drastically as they lost 76 oil Wells to Akwa Ibom state. Hence most of the things Duke was able to do was challenging to be continued, with a limited revenue for his successors.

SB2020:
Interesting facts about Addis Ababa and Lagos light rail projects.

Addis Ababa / Lagos
Cost == $475Million / $1.2Billion
Length == 34km / 27km
Time to Complete == 4years / 7years (projected)
Year Awarded == 2011 / 2008 (Construction began 2010)
Contractor == China Railway Eng. Corp (CREC) /Chinese Civil Eng. Constr. Coy (CCECC)
Population == 5Million / 20Million

Ethiopia has managed to deliver Sub-Saharan Africa’s first modern light rail project which opened in the capital Addis Ababa on Sunday, and in the process, beat Lagos whose own rail project remains four years behind schedule.

Ethiopia’s rail project was delivered on time, despite its being longer than the Lagos – Badagry rail line currently under construction.

Addis Ababa’s two line 34-kilometre system was built by the China Railway Engineering Corporation (CREC) and cost $475m, 85 percent of which has been covered by China’s Exim bank. The Lagos Light Rail Project or Blue on Badagry Expressway, was to have 13 stations from Okokomaiko to Marina via Iddo for a total of 27 kilometres.

The contract was awarded to the Chinese Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC) at the cost of $1.2 billion in 2008, and was to be delivered in 2011. Survey work took one year between August 2009 and August 2010 while construction began July 2010.

The work is being implemented using the public and private partnership (PPP) model, whereby the state builds the infrastructure and the private sector provides the rolling stock and management. However, the project has not worked out according to the plan.
The 2011 deadline was missed, even though the State government got a loan to fund the project.

TTC in talks to sell old trains to Lagos. Are they safe enough?
AUGUST 10, 2011

Fashola visited Toronto earlier this year to inspect the TTC trains.

The Lagos deal would be the first of its kind for the TTC. Decommissioned cars are usually sold for scrap metal and can fetch up to $1,500 dollar each. While Ross declined to discuss specific figures, he says the sticker price for Lagos is "significantly more" than scrap prices, putting the potential profits to the TTC in the millions of dollars.

It is not unusual for technology from western nations to end up in poorer countries. Marketplaces in Africa and Asia are flooded with North American clothes, computers, and even cars, but the purchase of larger technology like trains is rarer.

The cars will have to be significantly refurbished to fit existing infrastructure in Lagos, and some Nigerian media reports have lamented that the government appears to have settled on "tokundo," or used, trains instead of brand new vehicles.

Although half the cars are more than 30 years old, Ross is adamant they are perfectly safe and are only being decommissioned for capacity reasons. But he also admitted the TTC is not required to make sure the cars meet any safety standards before selling them.

"Once sold, it's up to the new operator to ensure they are in good working order," he said. "They do need to be maintained much more frequently than the new trains, simply because of their age. At some point they will run out their useful life."

Murtaza Haider, director of the Institute of Housing and Mobility at Ryerson University, said the age of the cars is definitely a cause for concern.

"We should be ensuring that there is some service life left in these vehicles and we're not going to be playing havoc with the lives of those who would ride these vehicles," Haider said. "There's metal fatigue, and that metal fatigue could result in dangerous conditions. I would be paying a close watch on this for the next ten years to see how many accidents do happen in Lagos."

He also warned that while rail systems are glamorous as far as transit infrastructure goes, they are not always as effective at reducing congestion as other options. Nevertheless, new rail systems are frequently preferred because governments can take advantage of kickbacks from large contracts.

According to media reports, the cost estimates for the Lagos rail project have varied wildly from $1.2 billion to $30 billion. In 2010, a Nigerian government watchdog accused Fashola's government of widespread corruption.

"More often than not, politicians favour rail transit because it is more expensive," Haider said. "It's almost useless in some cases, and less productive in most cases, than a bus system. But you can't buy busses for $30 billion. You can inflate prices and make a lot of money buying a rail system."

N3TRAL:
If any party takes over Lagos as it is today with the rate of rural-urban migration and absence of well structured systems in the Country, Lagos will become a big mess and a burden to the country.

Let's use Cross River State as a case study.

As a child during Christmas, we would land at the Airport in Calabar to spend our Christmas vacation as spectators of the colourful bands that will dance past us during the Calabar carnival.

You should instead study the rise of the Emirates to understand how the succession of their monarchs helped them in achieving their goals or China to comprehend why there is the CCP.
....and you said you were a kid during Donald Duke’s tenure and that should place your age somewhere around late 20’s or early 30’s.

Wow, I am so impressed. The content that came out of you doesn’t reflect that age at all. You are smart, wise and superb intelligent. (This has nothing to do with Obi or Atiku or Tinubu... I am just admiring brain)

Then we should just eliminate democracy and call for communism. You realize you're culpable of double-think here , why are we talking about voting at all? Other African countries that had rulers for decades, how far?

It is time to vote out Tinubu from Lagos. I will personally be mobilising to vote out APC. Tinubu will retire to France by 2023.

Only thing I wanted to hear, he said it.

Accommodation is a big problem here in Lagos yet the govt isn't doing anything about it.

How can i be looking for a room and parlour self contain in mushin and I am expected to 600k plus 200k as agent and agreement fee making everything 800k for a substandard house yet I will still have to spend over 300k doing work in the house landlord is supposed to do.

I used mushin as an example in places like ikeja, surulere, Festac even ajegunle the situation is worse.

Housing is a big problem in Lagos and it must be looked into
